A interesting article by
'Number', assistant referee Kenji Ito talks about the RJN this summer.
"The Satsumasendai training camp that followed in August was quite unique. We worked hard for seven days straight, without a single day of rest. In the home match on the final day, everyone was clearly exhausted, but they didn't give up and played volleyball at an extremely high level. You could feel the determination that "Let's get through this training camp together." But this made me even more worried about the training camp after the NTC.
Despite the short break, their bodies were definitely tired, and I think it was difficult to stay motivated. I think this year's new members felt this was the right year to break through, but I could sense the mental fatigue of players who had been key players until last year, like Onodera Taishi and Ishikawa Yuki.
I think we missed our peak. Turkey was in great form in the first match, even if we had played our best, it was hard to say what would have happened. Losing that first match was a hard blow for everyone; we were already mentally exhausted.
The difficulties of the first year with the new system, the difficulty of managing our emotions for the following year, created some inconsistencies, and we regret not being able to manage everything correctly.
Against Canada, good shots were collected and passed, and Ishikawa wasn't scoring very well. The Canadian blockers were wary of the posts and moved more toward the center, leaving the side of the line free, so I thought Otsuka Tatsunori's line shots and blocks, which are his forte, would have been perfect. (Midway through the first set, Ito suggested to Coach Tille that Otsuka might be a good choice, but he wasn't substituted until the end of the second set.) It was a shame because Otsuka had scored a lot of spike points in the third set. Setter Oya was also struggling a bit, so Eiro came in and the shots became longer, and I wondered if Otsuka had been different.
Otsuka was emotional and told me, "I'm sorry I didn't earn the coach's trust; he wouldn't have let me be replaced so quickly in a situation like that. If only I'd had that kind of trust."
I think it was very hard for Miyaura. During training camps, the training volume inevitably increased to ensure all five outfield players were trained evenly.
Furthermore, Miyaura is a very serious player, so in addition to team practices and matches, he also trains alone in the mornings. He's the kind of guy who works hard when no one is watching. And he never complains. It was a shock to see a player like that cry. It was a little hard for me to see the player who was trying the hardest be sad.
Ishikawa and I sometimes have a casual chat. Before the match against Canada, we agreed that it was definitely better for us not to allow our opponents to hit fast shots, so I think it would be better to focus on players who are poor at receiving serves. In practice, Ishikawa and I were talking about something different than what the coach had said.
Due to our small size, we can't keep up with high, fast shots. If the shot is taken without a blocker, it's difficult, no matter how good the recoveries. But when it comes to side attacks, a blocker can always jump, which limits the path to some extent, so we're strong.
Tille, however, wants to put pressure on the opponent's best hitter with his serves, so the focus of his serve was decided based on that. I thought this year would be the right season for Tille to do what he wanted, so I talked about it with Ishikawa too."
