Faith after Betrayal: Processing Pain & Anger in Light of Recent Events
The news of an egregious case of child sexual abuse and ongoing police investigation involving Wisam Sharieff has shocked all of us at AlMaghrib, as well as the wider Muslim community, and our hearts are with the victim of this unimaginable violation.
Spiritual abuse of any form has no place in our sacred spaces.
We are all experiencing a mix of emotions: feelings of anger, pain, and betrayal.
Everyone feels deeply shaken and unsettled by the recent events, so we want to provide a safe space to process these feelings.
This Thursday, join us for a live online session covering:

On Saturday, I was scheduled to be on a panel with Wisam Sharieff at a fundraising event put on by perhaps the most reputable humanitarian organization in the Muslim community. When Wisam didnโt show due to a โfamily emergencyโ, we all thought that something horrible had happened to his family. I was sickened to read the criminal complaint that someone texted me Sunday evening detailing the predatory behavior.
Praying for the victims involved, firstly the minor child who was manipulated by her mom and Wisam, but also Wisamโs wife who actually turned him in to authorities.
Countless organizations have worked with him over the years. He led Umrah groups, spoke at national conferences, and hosted charity events. When this sickening cyber abuse and exploitation took place, he was on a humanitarian mission working with refugees overseas.
Al-Maghrib did the right thing by immediately terminating him and informing everyone the same day. As an attorney, I wouldโve advised them to do exactly that.
Sexual abuse by spiritual leaders is something that must be called out and anyone who uses their position to transgress upon another must be held accountable. Wisam will be held accountable for his actions, both in the world and before Allah.
Some seem to be troubled by the use of "romantic relationships" here. I don't think Al Maghrib are trying to say that the abuse was romantic or minimise it in any way - but that even romantic relationships, let alone such horrific abuse, are strictly forbidden. It's also relevant because the abuse of the minor seems to have started from a romantic relationship with her mother.
And I take them at their word being a long-time Al Maghrib student, whenever I've asked a question, the answers have been short and straight to the point. No unnecessary conversation. This is what I've always observed with any male scholar to female interaction. I hope to see Sherieff's former colleagues make statements too.
We are appalled and horrified by the shocking revelations surrounding Wisam Sharieff.
