Spare time game dev working on one-person zero-budget games called #Snowfallen. Mathematician, Nerd, Gamer. Secondary (english) account of @mandelbroetchen.
A lot of progress has been made within the last week. I implemented a save/load feature and item qualities. Items can now be magical, uniques, oder artefacts.
Today I implemented spider webs as traps that slow down creatures when walking into them. Also included spider lairs and effect icons in the upper left corner to show active effects currently influencing the player.
Today I implemented the first trap. Traps are invisible until something steps on it or the player is successful in a perception roll. Since traps are internally also actors invisible monsters are now also possible.
There are currently no talent requirements to learn other talents. So it is not really a talent TREE. Most of the time I personally do not like trees that force me to pick a talent that I will never use just to get to the next one.
I thought a lot about character progression in the last few days. Even within the classical roguelike genre there are vastly different approaches to character development. In some roguelikes you just choose a class and the progression is more or less linear from this point on.
The most important thing is that your preselected class choice limits the maximal expertise level you can select within a skill. For example fighters might be masterful swordsmen but they will never be experts in magic. But you still have enough freedom to try different builds.
Since I did not tweet for four years let me give you an update on myself and my game dev adventures. I quit my day job and I am now a freelance IT consultant. I also got my phd in computer science. Let's say: work life is currently great.
I reworked Snowfallen from scratch with a new code base. Funny enough the 7DRL version was coded in Unity. I tried other base engines for the new version (like the TOME4 engine in lua) but did fall back to Unity at some point because it gives me the most flexibility.
@JeffSinasac I just wanted to leave some rogue love here. I am following your youtube channel for a while and watched a lot of your moria playthrough (and others). Entertaining work.
Time to reactivate this account after four years of silence. Well, I was tweeting on my main account @mandelbroetchen a lot but rarely about game dev stuff. I have been working on a new version of #Snowfallen though.
