It’s no surprise that it’s typically the larger companies that have the resources to throw at basic research. Public funded research is pivotal there’s no way around it that I can see

@prakyath_k @beffjezos Your comment made me look up the history of Information Theory and I found out that the foundational mathematics of Information Theory comes from Thermodynamics and so on. Science is cumulative. This builds on that. Besides, private companies too get gov grants for research
