Willam Simpson, a Scotish draughtsman, lithographer, watercolorist, journalist, and antiquarian, was born on October 28, 1823, in Glasgow, Scotland. He is
renowned for his wartime sketches created for the lllustrated London News.
As a journalist, Simpson reported on the Crimean War (1853-56) and went on to cover several other conflicts, including the Abyssinian campaign (1868), the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71), Modoc War (1873), and the Second Afghan War (1878).
In 1859, Simpson first traveled to lndia, commissioned by Publisher willam Day to create a large-scale illustrated work depicting the country following the 1857 Mutiny Unfortunately, the project was abandoned due to the publisher's bankruptcy. However,in 1875-76, Simpson
accompanied the Prince of Wales on his tour of India.
Simpson's keen eye documented the vibrant hues of the Himalayas, the majestic architecture of Delhi's monuments and daily life in bustling marketplaces. His illustrations published in periodicals like "The lllustrated London News" provided Western audiences with a visual gateway to India's wonders.
His travels not only showcased his artistic prowess but also fostered cross-cultural understanding, leaving an enduring legacy in the intersection of art and exploration.
