Here is how @coinbase (also referred to as @conbase) can rob you. They sell you BTC for one price, buy it from another exchange for $1,000 less and then transfer that BTC into your wallet, thus making $1,000
I once dug into btc archives with @OriNewman and @Elichai2 in order to see how this change from longest to heaviest chain took place.
Since it was a sensitive vulnerability fix, I was curious to see how it was rolled out. Apparently, as you will see in a moment, this might have been the first cryptocurrency security-by-obfuscation episode.
It turns out that Satoshi hid this crucial fix within version 0.3.2.5 titled โFaster initial block download (5x faster)โ, which casually mentioned โother important security improvements from 0.3.2โ.
The fix itself was included in an unrelated commit titled โGavin Andresen's JSON-RPC HTTP authenticationโ.
This was (most-likely) in order to prevent attacks abusing the previous rule before all miners upgrade to the new fixed rule. Note that this change, although severe, did not require a hardfork (bcs it only affects which chain you mine on which is a subjective miner decision). See the attached image and links [1,2,3] for detailed proofs.
Background:
At some point in 2010, Satoshi realized he must switch from the longest chain rule (as described in the btc paper), to the heaviest chain rule in order to prevent difficulty attacks where a side chain reduces difficulty and manages to create a longer sidechain with less hashrate.
