The Koeksister Project works to empower communities through a concept called Donut Economics. Part of what we do is legal court cases, we litigate against some of the biggest giants like TotalEnergies and Shell.

From mining royalties to ocean rights, the message is clear, true progress only happens when local voices lead the way.

The Alternative Story of Mining is a story of resistance that works. This afternoon in the Cathedral, we are diving deep into the session: Beyond all idle talk and dialogues.

We are unpacking the actual strategies, from legal challenges to community mobilisation, that have successfully held mining giants and governments to account.

The time for talking is over. The time for strategy is now.

Despite facing threats and violence, the Church remains a "prophetic witness" against the systematic violation of human rights and the exploitation of natural resources. We are here to serve the whole human person spiritually, socially, and economically.

Lusungu Kumwenda Mangochi from the Evangelical Association of Malawi brings a powerful call for economic justice — naming corporate tax evasion and the often invisible costs of mining, including the violation of children’s rights to education in mining-affected communities.

This is what Alternative Stories of Mining look like: voices speaking truth, demanding mining policies that place community welfare before multinational profit.

Here at #AMI2026, Kudzwai Gokova of Pamoja Zambia is ensuring this story is not buried under corporate silence — calling for accountability for the Sino-Metals leach collapse and challenging the myth of mining as development when it leaves water toxic and communities in danger.
