Imam Husayn ibn Ali (Hussain) was the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and son of Ali. In 680 CE he refused to pledge allegiance to Umayyad caliph Yazid I, whom he saw as unjust and corrupt. With ~72 companions he was surrounded at Karbala and killed on 10 Muharram (Ashura) along with most of his group.

His stand is remembered as a principled refusal to submit to tyranny and a defense of truth and dignity.

On modern Western values: his resistance to illegitimate authority and willingness to sacrifice for moral principles echoes core Western ideals of opposing despotism and upholding justice. He operated in a 7th-century religious-political context, not Enlightenment liberalism, yet his legacy of integrity against power is widely admired across cultures, including by non-Muslim thinkers.
