My first, second and third bylines in @climate!
📈August heat broke records since 1880 in Europe, North America and China

CHINA DESERVES GREAT PRAISE FOR PLEDGING TO STOP BUILDING COAL PLANTS OVERSEAS – THE 1ST DEVELOPING COUNTRY TO MAKE SUCH A PLEDGE AND THE LAST OF THE MAJOR PUBLIC FINANCIERS OF OVERSEAS COAL TO DO SO.
NOW THAT THE WORLD’S MAJOR GOVERNMENTS HAVE LED BY EXAMPLE AND BANNED...
Xi Jinping at UN General Assembly: We will not build new coal power plants abroad. Will support developing countries in developing green energy. That is a massive shift and leaves no international financing for new coal.
China likely adds 100-110GW Wind & Solar capacity this year.
China Electricity Council expects 140GW non-fossil generation capacity additions in 2021.
🍀⚡️ 🇨🇳Non-fossil will rise to 1120 GW, possibly larger than Coal-fired fleet then.
🇨🇳President Xi's speech in English:
https://t.co/AzKLhEHLAO
'China will strictly control coal-fired power generation projects, and strictly limit the increase in coal consumption over the 14th FYP period and phase it down in the 15th FYP period.'
Are you A) today is earth day or B) every day is earth day?
I am C) I am not working on 'earth day'.
I'm writing poems and letters. I'm making gifts. I'm walking (or maybe biking) and loving our earth.
#EarthDay 🌎🌍🌏
What's new today:
*US to cut CO2 by 50-52% by 2030
*Japan 46% by 2030, prev. 28%
*Canada 40-45% by 2030, prev. 30%
*Korea to stop financing coal overseas
*China to peak coal use by 2025
Did boris Johnson just say "cake have eat is my message" because if so that is my new favorite sentence structure. Happy earth day and happy climate leaders summit y'all ✌️🌎🌏🌍
President Xi didn’t announce any new climate targets, but his explicit (and first ever) reference to a coal “phase down” sends a clear and important political signal domestically. All sectors and stakeholders must contribute to achieve China’s early peaking and early neutrality.
🇨🇳President Xi's speech at #LeadersClimateSummit
- No announcement of new climate goals/commitments
- Reiterated China's 2030 and 2060 pledge, Green BRI
But stressed 'Strictly control Coal power, control Coal consumption in 14FYP & gradual reduce in 15FYP'
Xi: Strictly control coal-fired power generation projects. Limit coal increase in the 14th FYP period, phase down in 15th FYP period. Also: China’s time from peak to carbon neutrality will be shorter than developed countries.
Xi Jinping vows to "strictly control coal-fired generation projects."
"We still strictly limit the increase in coal consumption and phase it down," he says.
"China has committed to move from carbon peak to carbon neutrality in a much shorter timespan than in most countries."
Friday has been signalled as the date in which China will release their 14th Five Year Plan. We will be providing expert analysis on the release, so stay tuned here.
For now, here are the climate and energy targets that we think are worth watching 👇

Very excited to be hosting this online discussion Thursday 7 pm EST with Ma Jun of Institute for Public and Environmental Affairs and Professor Sachs of Columbia University on how China and the US are moving to a zero carbon future. Register online below!
China and the U.S. are the two greatest emitters of #carbon and have the power to either save or destroy the planet. On March 4, @jeffdsachs and Ma Jun -- two superstar climate thinkers -- will talk about the race to #netzero emissions: https://t.co/bO8C7aSHd7 #climatechange
