#KnowYourSIU| 1. The SIU does not target people nor do we investigate people. We investigate procurement processes in State Institutions and all levels of government departments, and it's through these processes that we find people who are responsible. In simple terms, we follow the money and the money leads us to people.

2. The law that governs the SIU states that the SIU does not identify its own investigations. We receive allegations, which we then assess to see if falls within our mandate, and we write a motivation for a proclamation to the President for authorisation.

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has directed Ministers and senior government officials to reduce overseas travel.

Any minister or high-ranking official wishing to travel abroad for meetings or conferences must now provide a clear justification, explaining:
• The specific benefits the trip will bring to Rwandans, and
• The potential losses or risks to Rwanda if the travel does not take place.
This measure aims to prevent wasteful spending on non-essential international trips.

The ratings question is a misdirection.

Even if a show is number 7 out of 10, or 10 out of 10 - the concern was about political pressure influencing the decision to cancel.

Political interference and specifically getting a show cancelled is censorship and a violation of media rights.

If Jacob Zuma pushed for a show to be cancelled in 2016, would it matter if it was being watched by 50 000 people or 150 000 people daily.

Also the ratings questions is a red herring for another reason. A policy show is not meant to be a blockbuster on a national broadcaster. The news are not meant to compete with a celebrity show or a reality show.

It is rather a tool for democratic enhancement, it is a tool for transparency and accountability.

Government officials are meant to explain their ideas, actions and inaction to the public to allow that public to hold them accountable through voting and other mechanisms.

If they keep cancelling shows, JJ Tabane, Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, there will be no one brave enough to ask the hard questions to government officials because the deterrent has been communicated.

There will be no journalists senior enough to ask President’s and ministers robust questions and to pushback on their spin and even their misconduct.

If you look at Sky News and people like Beth Rigby or Trevor Phillips they have been kept in the NewsRoom and given space to do the work.

So the question is- was there political influence or pressure?
