Vardan Stepanyan, a hero of the Artsakh Liberation War, was born in Yerevan on this day in 1966.

Dubbed "Dushman" by enemy soldiers in Afghanistan, he joined the Artsakh liberation movement in 1988, participating in various military operations, including the liberation of Shushi.

In 1989, facing a shortage of weapons in Artsakh, Vardan embarked on a special mission to Moscow, successfully delivering much-needed weapons and ammunition to Armenia.

Together with Armen Yeritsyan, he established the "Knight" military school, where volunteers bound for Artsakh received training.

Tragically, just six weeks after the liberation of Berdzor, Vardan lost his life on the road to Martuni when the vehicle he was in struck a landmine.
