This is not a regional tragedy, it is a national emergency. Gilgit-Baltistan must be declared a climate emergency now. Action is urgent—before the Crown of Pakistan crumbles entirely.
Gilgit-Baltistan, the “Crown of Pakistan,” is drowning. Glacial floods, mudslides & rains have destroyed villages, schools, bridges & lives. From Hunza to Ghizer, Diamer to Baltistan — the entire region is bleeding.
7 volunteers died in Danyor trying to restore water. A child in Ghizer lost 6 family members in one night. Tech startups are paralyzed with no electricity, children are out of schools, families cut off from loved ones for weeks.

Condemning the brutal attack on the Ghulam Muhammad @shahzadasgm , GM KCBL at his office in Gilgit.
This is Lawlessness and failure of security forces to arrest the culprits is questionable.
The General Manager (GM) Ghulam Muhammad of Karakoram Cooperative Bank Limited (KCBL) has been brutally beaten in his office. As per the FIR, at around 4 p.m., three men entered the GM’s office and demanded hiring one of their close relatives in the organization. They used foul words towards the GM when he told the men that hirings are done through due process.
The FIR notes that upon GM asking the three men not to curse, they brutally beat him and threatened to kill him afterwards. Mr. Gulam Muhammad was immediately rushed to the hospital, and an FIR was lodged against the three men. Of the three, the identities of two are unknown, while one of them is Naseem, the son of Wasal Khan, a retired DIG.
It is imperative to note here that a few days prior to this incident, Naseem (the culprit) was also nominated in the FIR for the abduction of Mr. Ameer Altaf Shah, an alleged ransom case. It is also important to note here that the culprit has not been arrested in either case. The lack of action by the law-enforcing authorities is alarming for the safety and security of the residents of Gilgit-Baltistan. The recent rise in such incidents has put a big question mark on the role of law-enforcing authorities in Gilgit-Baltistan.

After unprecedented and intense protests across Gilgit-Baltistan, the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan shared notification reversing the previous reduction of subsidy on wheat.
However the Awami Action Committee says that this is only 1 of the 15 demands. AAC says that the protests will continue, more protesters from other districts will join the sit-in until all demands are met.
On AAC’s call to continue the protests, on Monday, the protesters have started gathering at Itihad chowk in Gilgit, which is the provincial capital, where thousands had gathered past days from other districts of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Background of the protests:
Protests and sit-ins started in Gilgit-Baltistan when the subsidized wheat prices were raised significantly. Although in great numbers, these demonstrations were initially scattered across the region. The protests eventually gained momentum, and after over a month of sit-ins in Baltistan and protests in Gilgit City, the call was made by the Awami Action Committee (AAC) to implement a 2-day shutter-down and wheel-jam strike across ten districts of GB. Rallies with unprecedented participation from various districts of GB have now arrived in Gilgit City for participation in the main protest. The demands put forth by the AAC include reverting the price of subsidized wheat to the level of 2002, suspending the Finance Act 2023 and the withdrawal of taxes on GB residents, resolution of the electricity crisis, and declaring empty and uninhabited lands 100 percent public property through the Gilgit-Baltistan Reforms Bill, among the list of 15 total demands. You can find the video explaining all 15 demands on our page.
