The true purpose of Initiation is the formation of a complete human being.
A mind crowded with facts can still remain disorderly, selfish, and ungoverned. A memory filled with formulas can still leave the heart untouched. The work of Masonry is directed toward a higher end: the cultivation of discipline, conscience, and service.
Universal Co-Masonry seeks this education of the whole person. It calls men and women to become capable of liberty, capable of fraternity, capable of truth and self-command. The Lodge is a school of moral architecture, where the soul is taught to measure itself by something higher than appetite, vanity, or ambition.
The great gift of the Craft is human formation. It teaches the rough stone to receive the line, the hand to obey the rule, and the life to become useful in the building of a just and ordered world
Masonry teaches through symbol because the highest matters of the soul require images to capture the essence of the ideal.
A symbol is a labor of the mind. It does not exhaust itself in one explanation. It opens a field of contemplation and asks the student to return again and again, with clearer reason, deeper feeling, and a more disciplined conscience. The square, compasses, plumb, level, mallet, chisel, and tracing board are instruments of moral inquiry. They are drawn from the builder’s art, yet their proper use is found in the building of character.
Universal Co-Masonry preserves this ancient mode of instruction. Its ceremonies are living problems set before the thoughtful person. They ask for study, interpretation, patience, and practice. The lecture may mark the road, yet the Mason must walk it with his own feet. The symbol must pass from the eye into the mind, from the mind into the conscience, and from the conscience into conduct.
The temple is raised by those who learn to read.
