2 NSCDC Officers, One Other Arrested by Nigerian Army Over Alleged Arms Supply to Militants in the South East
The Nigerian Army has uncovered an alleged illegal arms supply network involving two officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and an officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, in what security authorities describe as a major breakthrough in the fight against criminal groups in the South-East.
The arrests were made by troops of the Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, during a series of intelligence-led operations carried out in collaboration with other security agencies.
According to a statement by the Army, “The operations led to the arrest of several suspects involved in criminal activities and the recovery of arms, amm¥nition and other incriminating items, further strengthening efforts to enhance security in the region.”
The Army disclosed that Assistant Superintendent II Obaji Sampson of the NSCDC was first arrested following intelligence provided by the 82 Military Intelligence Brigade.
Investigations led to the arrest of Superintendent Tasie Victor Nnamdi, the Unit Armourer of the NSCDC Enugu State Command, identified as “the principal supplier,” and Assistant Superintendent of Corrections Ekwueme Onyebuchi Clement, identified as “a major recipient.”
According to the statement, “The arrests exposed a suspected illegal arms supply network.”
In a follow-up operation, troops raided a residence at Achara Road, Trans-Ekulu, Golf Estate, Enugu State, where suspected IPOB/ESN member and alleged g¥n runner Friday Nnanna was arrested.
Security operatives recovered 247 rounds of 7.62mm special amm¥nition, 12 rounds of 9mm pistol amm¥nition, 29 live cartridges, four pump-action g¥ns, a Beretta pistol, IED-making materials, military gear, assorted weapons and four vehicles.
The Army reiterated its resolve to dismantle criminal networks, stating, “The Nigerian Army remains committed to sustaining intelligence-driven operations against criminal elements and their support networks.”
