UNHCR has assisted hundreds of thousands of Afghans who’ve returned home - many under duress.
51% are women and 32% of households are headed by women.
Without our female national staff, we cannot serve them and have been forced to temporarily close our cash and support centres.
UNHCR is deeply saddened by the deadly earthquake in Afghanistan, a crisis within a crisis, as the country struggles to cope with mass returns from neighbouring countries. Our thoughts are with victims. UNHCR is responding on the ground, but more resources are urgently needed.
A major earthquake has caused many casualties in Afghanistan. This adds death and destruction to other challenges including drought and the forced return of millions of Afghans from neighbouring countries. Hopefully the donor community will not hesitate to support relief efforts.
