Die heutigen Ereignisse zeigen einmal mehr, dass in dieser neuen Weltordnung nur ein wirtschaftlich wie militärisch starkes und geeintes Europa für unsere eigenen Interessen eintreten kann. So wie ich es schon lange sage: Europa als freier und selbstbewusster Akteur statt ein ohnmächtiger Spielball zu dem uns Nationalisten in Europa machen wollen!

Maduro hat die Menschen in Venezuela unterdrückt, Not und Gewalt standen an der Tagesordnung. Er hat offen Wahlfälschung betrieben und einen friedlichen Machtwechsel verhindert. Millionen Menschen sind vor dieser sozialistischen Diktatur geflohen. Österreich und die EU haben Maduro deshalb als Präsidenten nicht anerkannt.

Gleichzeitig: Es muss die Stärke des Rechts gelten, und nicht das Recht des Stärkeren.
Militärische Operationen ohne Mandat des UN-Sicherheitsrats widersprechen diesem Grundsatz und schaffen gefährliche Präzedenzfälle. Die neue Ära der Machtpolitik wird es nicht leicht machen die Prinzipien des Völkerrechts hochzuhalten. Gerade deshalb müssen wir es tun, gerade als kleines Land als wichtiges Prinzip unserer Außenpolitik.

Österreich setzt sich für einen raschen, friedlichen und demokratischen Übergang in Venezuela im Einklang mit dem Völkerrecht ein, der den Menschen wirklich Freiheit und Selbstbestimmung ermöglicht.
