PROF BARIKOR PRAISES NIGERIANS FOR INTEREST IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

The Director General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Prof Innocent Barikor has thanked Nigerians for their proactive role as environmental vanguards, noting that their efforts have significantly enhanced the Agency's response to environmental challenges in the country.

Prof. Barikor gave the commendation on Tuesday in Abuja during the maiden edition of NESREA Half Hour, a 30 minutes programme on National Traffic Radio 107.1 Abuja .

He noted that the awareness drive by the Agency has significantly increased environmental consciousness among citizens, with more Nigerians actively serving as whistleblowers.

“We are building a generation of environmentally conscious citizens. Nigerians are very responsive to environmental matters and awareness has improved with the various steps and channels we have opened up for enlightenment.”

The NESREA DG disclosed that in the course of implementing the provisions of the National Environmental Regulations, the Agency had sealed 117 non-compliant facilities in the past one year in different parts of the country.

According to him, “we continue to preach voluntary compliance, but we will not hesitate to deal with recalcitrant ecosystem disruptors”.

He encouraged Nigerians to continue to take interest in the environment , whilst pledging the commitment of the Agency towards ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for all Nigerians.

Prof. Barikor extended his appreciation to the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Shehu Mohammed for providing NESREA the platform for the Sensitization.

NESREA Half Hour is a partnership between the FRSC and NESREA to enlighten Nigerians about the environment.

UNIPORT CONFERS PROFESSORSHIP ON NESREA DG DR. INNOCENT BARIKOR

The University of Portharcourt on Monday promoted the Director General of NESREA, Dr. Innocent Barikor to a Professor of Political Economy and Development Studies.
His promotion came alongside that of 45 other staff of the institution.

In a statement, the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. Onwunari Georgewill disclosed that the promotion of 46 staff of the school was approved during the 187th meeting of the Governing Council, chaired by the Pro-Chancellor of the institution and Chairman, Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa.

Prof. Georgewill further stated that 30 senior academics were promoted to the rank of Professor, and 16 others to associate professor after undergoing the rigorous assessment process set up by the university.
Prof. Innocent Barikor assumed office as the Director General of NESREA in May last year.
Since he assumed office, Prof. Barikor has recorded remarkable progress in promoting environmental sustainability in the country.
Under his committed leadership, the Agency is vigorously implementing the Extended Producer Responsibility Programme in the Food and Beverage, Battery, Used Tyres, and Electrical/ Electronics sectors.
He championed the development of key legislations to promote environmental governance including , the National Environmental (Battery Control) Regulations 2024, the development of National Guidelines for the Implementation of EPR for (Plastic) Packaging, and The National Environmental (Plastic Waste Control) Regulations which is awaiting gazette.

Prof. Barikor among numerous achievements, also supervised the review of the National Environmental (Permitting and Licensing Systems) Regulations 2009; and the National Environmental (International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora) Regulations 2011.
Under him, the Agency carried out 1,671 Compliance monitoring inspections/visits to various facilities and a total of 96 facilities shutdown for environmental infractions.

To achieve greater efficiency and take environmental governance close to the grassroots, he unbundled NESREA offices in key states of the federation.

With the support of the Fleming Fund, funded by UKAid , and implemented through Management Sciences for Health MSH and the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) he is equipping the National Reference Laboratory Port-Harcourt with State-of-the art equipment for environmental research and laboratory investigations and installation of a 30Kva solar power system designed to provide 24hrs power supply to the laboratory.

The Agency in March this year, launched a National Industrial Decarbonisation Programme (NIDP) with the aim of tackling emissions from the industrial sector and other sources, and also hosted an International Conference on Upgrading the Lead-Battery Recycling Sector in the African Region, under the Partnership for Responsible Battery and Metal Recycling (PROBAMET).

He has provided the needed zeal and dedication to attract support from international partners such as the European Union, the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime, the German and Japanese Governments, African Center for Protection, and the Elephant Protection Initiative Foundation (EPIF).

DG NESREA Holds Strategic Meeting with Management, Emphasizes Quality Leadership and Teamwork

The Director General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, (NESREA), Dr. Innocent Barikor has tasked the Top Management team and principal officers of the Agency on providing quality leadership and propagating the culture of teamwork to enhance effective service delivery.

Dr. Barikor gave the charge during separate virtual meetings with Directors and Zonal Directors; State Coordinators and Heads of Operational Offices as well as other principal staff of the Agency.
He said the Agency had unbundled some State Field Offices in a move to get the Agency closer to citizens and to ensure optimal performance.

The NESREA boss also added that the focus of the Agency in the year 2025, was to build on successes recorded in the previous year, and scale up collaboration with State Governments, relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Government, as well as other relevant stakeholders to achieve the mandate of the Agency.

JAPANESE GOVERNMENT PLEDGES MORE SUPPORT FOR NIGERIA IN PLASTIC WASTE CONTROL, COMMENDS NESREA

The Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency, Hideo Suzuki says his country will provide more support for Nigeria in its efforts to tackle plastic waste control through the project, “Accelerating a Circular Plastic Economy to Reduce Plastic Pollution and its Impacts in African Region and its Countries”.

He noted that the initial support through Japanese Supplementary Budget (JSB1) had supported stakeholders' engagement, development of National Guidelines for the Implementation of EPR for Packaging (Plastic), and EPR Enforcement Plan.”

Speaking during a courtesy call on the Director General of NESREA, Dr. Innocent Barikor, Mr. Suzuki expressed the satisfaction of the Japanese government with the dedication and commitment exhibited by NESREA in the first phase of the project.
The Ambassador said the second phase of the project which would be funded from the Japanese Supplementary Budget 2 (JSB2) would kick off in March 2025 and further scale up on the initiatives of first phase.

The second phase of the project will consider development of reuse and refill systems to address pollution from water sachets, conduct feasibility study and identify possible reuse solutions; consultations with relevant stakeholders; and identifying financial gaps for reuse systems and solutions to Single Use Plastic (SUP) pollution.

Responding, the Director General of NESREA, Dr. Innocent Barikor expressed his gratitude to the government and people of Japan, noting that their support has assisted the Agency in promoting sustainable environmental practices and aligning with circular plastic economy.

He said the Agency was desirous of understudying the advanced and effective waste management system operated in Japan and looked forward to future collaborations with the Government of Japan.
