There should be more universities like St. John's. I do not mean their specific great books curriculum so much as their commitment to a completely distinct curriculum that bares no resemblance to the standard American university model.
@tophtucker PROOFS AND REFUTATIONS YES YES TOPH LET'S DO A READING GROUP (this has also been on my long-running list)(bc it's very much my style of math... cf your first tweet here!)
@felpix_ i teach at a fancy bay area private school. this is all very true, very relatable, and incredibly sad (it's what we try, without success, to short-circuit :/)
@catehall I find I write more *defensively* as I get older, in a bad way---when I was younger it was far more natural for me just to outline a positive vision; with age I've become more used to getting criticism
The rich kids of Palo Alto will increasingly go private.
The poor kids of Palo Alto can’t get math acceleration or any personalized attention. Honors classes cancelled.
Virtue signaling is off the charts. This isn’t public service. This is dereliction of duty to the children.
One of the things that I don't see talked about a lot in 'classical' learning research is this idea that giving clear, unambiguous feedback is great for learning in structured environments (e.g. exams!) ... but it can actually DEGRADE your ability to learn from life.
the ideal podcast interview format would be someone asking me questions and I just say "hmm" out loud for 40 minutes and then we meet again in a year and I might have a few good answers

An honour to have my IQ questioned by you Mr VP. But your attempts to speak for Christ are false and dangerous. Nowhere does Jesus suggest that love is to be prioritized in concentric circles. His love is universal. 🧵
In college I would ignore the instructions for assignments and instead create something vaguely on topic but much more interesting than whatever the professor asked for. I got an A every single time. This is broadly applicable to the rest of life
Hey man, how are things? I heard that the catastrophe of your personality has started to seem beautiful again, and interesting, and modern. That’s sick
I don't know how to explain to these people that the point of the humanities/a classical education is not to quickly absorb info and get the shallow "gist" of it as soon as possible. Depth matters more than efficiency.
A welcome reminder for the beginning of the new semester. I will commence each class by giving the objectively correct answers to the questions we will be investigating.
