Le capitaine Paul Waston a été arrêté par les autorités danoises ce matin sur la base de la notice rouge d'Interpol, mise en place en 2012 suite au mandat d'arrêt du Japon.

Le Japon, qui vient d'inaugurer il y a quelques semaines le plus grand baleinier jamais construit, le Kangey Maru, a mené pendant de nombreuses années une chasse totalement illégale dans le sanctuaire baleinier antarctique.

Paul Watson avait alors mené plus d’une décennie d’opposition à cette chasse baleinière et avait permis de soustraire aux harpons explosifs japonais plus de 5000 baleines, causant des millions de dollars de pertes au gouvernement japonais.

En 2012, le Japon avait alors lancé un mandat d’arrêt contre Paul Watson pour « Conspiration d’abordage » , lequel avait été repris par une notice rouge d’Interpol. Il faut noter que le Parlement européen avait déjà averti sur les dérives liées à la notice rouge d’interpol, utilisée par certains gouvernements pour traquer leurs opposants politiques, étant comme une violation des droits de l’Homme. Le cas particulier de Paul Watson avait été cité en exemple de ce genre de dérive.

Le Danemark qui défend par ailleurs les massacres illégaux de dauphins aux iles Féroé, joue donc le jeu du Japon, qui a pourtant été condamné par le Tribunal International de La Haye pour chasse baleinière illégale dans le sanctuaire antarctique.

Concrètement, ce que Paul Watson risque aujourd'hui, à 74 ans, c'est l'extradition vers le Japon. Si cela arrive, il y terminera ses jours. Nous nous battrons jusqu'au bout pour empêcher ça.
