Greece is preparing for one of its most anticipated cultural evenings of the summer, as 126 museums, archaeological sites and monuments across the country will open their doors to the public free of charge during the August Full Moon celebrations on Friday, August 28, 2026.

The annual event, organized by the Ministry of Culture, has become a major summer cultural tradition, bringing visitors to some of Greece’s most important historical sites under the light of the full moon. This year marks the 27th consecutive edition of the initiative.

Of the 126 participating locations, 61 will host special cultural events, while another 65 will remain open to visitors with free admission. Depending on the location, opening hours are expected to run approximately from 7:30 or 8:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. or midnight.

The program includes concerts, dance performances, theatrical events, exhibitions and guided tours, offering visitors an opportunity to experience Greece’s archaeological heritage in an atmosphere very different from a typical daytime visit.

The celebrations will not be limited to August 28. Events are scheduled across Greece from August 26 through August 30, giving visitors several opportunities to take part in cultural activities surrounding the full moon.

In Thessaloniki, participating locations include the Roman Odeon, the Galerian Complex, the Macedonian Tomb at Derveni and the Byzantine Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Chortiatis. These sites will form part of the nationwide program highlighting Greece’s archaeological and architectural heritage.

The August Full Moon celebrations have become an opportunity for both residents and international visitors to discover some of Greece’s most significant monuments in a unique nighttime setting. Ancient ruins, museums and historic landmarks will be illuminated by the summer moon, combining cultural heritage with one of the most distinctive astronomical events of the season.

With free admission at participating locations and dozens of cultural events taking place across the country, the August Full Moon is expected to once again draw large crowds to Greece’s archaeological sites and monuments for an evening celebrating the country’s cultural heritage.

Hace 78-81 ka, los neandertales en Cueva Antón (Murcia, sur de España) fabricaban y modificaban herramientas líticas ergonómicamente para adaptarlas a las tareas, dividían el espacio en zonas de descanso y de trabajo, y utilizaban el sitio con distintas funciones... 🧵
