Detectives in South Wales Police are warning about a spate of cases of so-called sextortion – where victims are blackmailed with the threat of explicit images of themselves being shared, unless they pay money – that have been reported in recent weeks.

“A common assumption is that the findings would be transferable to all patient populations, treatment environments, and cultures which obviously is not always the case. Understanding their limitations is essential before extrapolation to clinical practice. Other research designs are needed to understand the diagnosis, validity of outcomes, and other important research issues. Participants enrolled in RCTs may or may not adequately represent the full population in which the study is designed to represent. The care provided may or may not reflect what is appropriately provided in clinical practice to individuals. No one suggests that researchers give up RCTs. Instead, it is important that there is supplementation of RCTs with other forms of evidence.”
There have been no large RCTs with body identical HRT in perimenopausal or menopausal women and there are unlikely to be any. However, we need to remember the absence of a smart, good RCT does not mean a treatment is not beneficial. It just might mean no one is willing to pay for the study to be done properly or that the treatment is effective so only giving placebo rather than the actual treatment may actually be unethical or detrimental to the individual in the study.
