We use different prompts for students to do searches such as varying the scope of search terms (general topic vs. specific research question), varying the search engine (e.g., Google Scholar vs. ProQuest).
Here's a resource you can use to help "suss out" articles very quickly for developing a literature review in the social sciences. Blanca Hernandez and I developed this for our doctoral students at @EriksonInst .
We have a new course series called "Scholarship Skills" and for the course focused on lit reviews, we use this resource "Anatomy of an Article" for 5 articles at the beginning of every class session.
I just find it funny that all the academics chastising me (& anyone) for worrying abt teaching the day after the election are men. it makes sense: they aren’t used to the emotional labor demanded of female profs any given day & the outcome isn’t nearly as much of a blow for them.
