"South Africa produces a surplus of food, yet children are dying of hunger. But the deaths from severe acute malnutrition are just the tip of the iceberg...
To design effective solutions, we need to look beyond individual behaviour to address the root causes. Many children live in severely food insecure households where caregivers skip meals to shield their children from hunger...
At the same time global food corporations have flooded South African markets with cheap, ultra-processed foods, high in sugar, salt and saturated fats, and low in nutrients. These are helping to fuel the rapid rise in obesity. Many children live in “food deserts” where healthy foods are unaffordable or unavailable."

[Basic Income Grant]: The National Treasury is currently reviewing the Basic Income Grant (BIG) policy to make a final decision - and it could land on the President’s desk any day now.
When that happens, President Ramaphosa will have a choice to make: stick to the commitments he made and give the people an accessible BIG that provides a livable income for everyone unemployed aged 18 to 59. No exclusionary hoops to jump through. Just the support that will finally allow millions of us to step out of poverty.
Together, we can make sure that when the President sees the draft, he’s thinking about the promises he made - and knows how urgently Mzansi needs a BIG.
Send the president a message to remind him of his BIG commitments - here: https://t.co/86B4rTVF53.

The grocery stores didn't show, but the people came through. Locked out of the SAHRC hearing by the landlord and private security, they chanted and sang for their freedom from hunger pains and empty cupboards.

[FOOD JUSTICE]: In the past week, the @SAHRCommission conducted and concluded the second leg of its inquiry into South Africa’s food systems.
For years, the Competition Commission has questioned if supermarket prices are justified. And we came together to demand that Shoprite, Mzansi’s largest food retailer, open its books and show us that its prices are fair. Even President Cyril Ramaphosa agreed with our demands, asking big food businesses like Shoprite to open their books and show us their profit margins.
In October last year, we submitted a memorandum to Shoprite together with our friends Union Against Hunger @UAH_za, but Shoprite never bothered to respond. They continue to avoid taking accountability as they refused to present at the SAHRC food inquiry last week - And we did not let them get away with it. We went to their offices in Pretoria to ask why they were not at the inquiry.
What is @Shoprite_SA hiding?
Mzansi has enough food to feed everyone, but food prices mean people go to sleep hungry. We will not back down until the hunger crisis in Mzansi is resolved.
We’re calling on the government to adequately address the cost-of-living crisis, and on big food retailers like Shoprite to lower the prices of all staple foods, not just cabbage, and be transparent about pricing. Join us and add your name to the petition here: https://t.co/N8pNcmN7mi.
Will keep you updated.

"Magistrate Mvuselelo Malindi handed down his verdict after a lengthy inquest exploring the circumstances surrounding the horrifying events of the night in question...
The ruling comes four years after the tragedy in which 21 young people died. The youngest victim was 13. Despite the court finding both the manager and owner grossly negligent for failing to comply with the Liquor Act, tavern owner Siyakhangela Ndevu said the parents were to blame.
Malindi also found police officer Sergeant Tabisa Kondile grossly negligent for failing to follow up on complaints about the tavern's contravention of liquor trading laws a month before the tragedy."

[PETITION]: Parents in the Mogale Junction community are calling on the Mayor, Lucky Godfrey Sele, to provide larger, safer school buses for their children.
The current bus is way too small to fit all children, resulting in an overload that poses a safety hazard. The school bus also often arrives late, so children often arrive at school way past the time.
The community is demanding the following:
- The municipality must replace the current buses and provide safer ones.
- Ensure the buses are large enough to carry all learners without being overloaded.
- Plan and implement a bus schedule to ensure learners' safety.
Support the community by adding your name to the petition here: https://t.co/IDW829BTHf.

A healthy food system starts with accountability. We’re standing in solidarity with @UAH_za and @AmandlaMobi because everyone deserves access to affordable, nutritious food. #FoodJustice
Some of SA's biggest retailers were absent from the Food Inquiry while communities demanded answers on food affordability.
We need action,not delay.
⚠️ Implement #FOPL
🥤 Strengthen the #HPL
People deserve healthier food environments.
Great reporting by @dailymaverick.
[FOOD JUSTICE]: "The second leg of South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) hearings on food systems began on Monday, 6 July, with key agrochemical and beef companies noticeably absent.
Werna Oberholzer, Tiger Brands’ chief corporate affairs and sustainability officer, said the company views its food as fundamental to health, dignity and wellbeing — a principle that directly shapes how it manufactures and markets its products...
...Oberholzer added that the company directs 1.5% of net profits toward socioeconomic development — reaching 71,000 beneficiaries last year — while aiming for 65% of its portfolio to meet its “Eat Well, Live Well” nutritional labelling standards by 2030.
However, Devereux challenged these figures, pointing out that nearly half of Tiger Brands’ current portfolio fails its own nutritional standards. Because these low-nutrition products are heavily promoted and consumed at scale in low-income communities, Devereux questioned how the company justifies continuing to profit from them."

"The comments follow statistics from the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness showing that 292 girls between the ages of 10 and 14 gave birth between April and December last year.
Ilitha Labantu said it is deeply alarmed by these figures.
The organisation's spokesperson, Siyabulela Monakali, stated: "Far too often, they are framed as teenage pregnancies, whereas we do not take into account that this framing further victimises children. No child between the ages of 10 and 14 can consent to sex. And we have to bear in mind that we are a country that has a significant issue when it comes to the rape culture that is prevalent within our communities.""

[SAHRC Food Inquiry]: The South African Human Rights Commission is currently conducting the second leg of its national investigation into South Africa's food systems.
On Monday, we showed up at the inquiry in solidarity with the victims and families affected by the 2017 listeriosis outbreak. To this day, Tiger Brands has yet to take full accountability.
Families have waited years while dealing with medical costs, trauma, disability, and loss. Justice delayed for this long becomes another form of harm. Victims should not have to struggle for basic support after a preventable public health tragedy.
Interim relief is a step, but many families believe it came far too late and does not erase years of suffering. Accountability is not only about payments, but it’s also about transparency, acknowledging harm, and ensuring that victims are treated with humanity and urgency. Many affected families are still waiting for closure.
We continue to stand in solidarity with the families as they demand full accountability, fair compensation and urgency.

What is #FOPL?
Simple warning labels on the front of food packaging that help consumers quickly identify products high in sugar, salt or saturated fat.
14,000+ signed in support.
South Africans deserve clear food labels.
It's time to implement R3337.

[UPDATE]: Following the removal of Sisisi Tolashe as the Minister of Social Development, President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Dina Pule as the new minister.
The appointment has been met with much criticism - Dina Pule was removed from cabinet as Minister of Communications back in 2013 for unethical conduct. More here: https://t.co/yl5kH6zHaQ.
The Department of Social Development plays a crucial role in social protection and the welfare of millions of vulnerable people in Mzansi. Already, Sisisi Tolashe, as minister, has failed the people in many ways, including cutting grants and making it difficult to access the R370 SRD grant. The position of minister requires someone who is ethical and strongly committed to fighting hunger and poverty. We are disappointed by President Ramaphosa's choice, as it shows little respect he has for the position and disregard for the people who rely on the department for survival.
❗️We want to hear from you - let us know in the comments what you think about Dina Pule being appointed as the Minister of Social Development.

[GBV]: "When Mphonyana Mtamane arrived at Zola Clinic in Soweto on the morning of 27 May 2026, she was visibly injured, with bruises and scratches showing on her face and neck...
“I arrived at Zola clinic at 9am, and I received help at 2pm. My matter was not treated as an emergency despite having visible scratches and bruises on my face. I was drained physically and emotionally, I just needed help and compassion”, she tells Health-e News
She was eventually assisted by a health promoter who saw how distressed she was...
Soon after, Mtamane was seen by a doctor. But even then, the care fell short. The doctor dispensed PEP medication without asking Mtamane any questions about her circumstances. She was not offered counselling, not referred to a social worker, and not connected to any GBV support service."
