Hi founders and hiring managers, please stop asking for unpaid work trials. Do this instead:

Few months back I interviewed with @brexHQ for a motion designer role. Didn't end up getting it (it was on-site in SF, visa stuff made it a bit tricky). But their process really stuck with me.

Instead of giving an unpaid take-home assignment, they hire you for a day and you actually work with the team, remote or on-site.

-You actually get to see how they work, their process,
how they give feedback, the pace, not just stare at a brief
-They get to see how you think and collaborate, not just judge one deliverable
-Nobody's working for free, nobody's guessing

An take-home assignment only tells a company what you can make. A trial day tells both sides if you can actually work together.

One of these is worth so much more.

More companies should be doing this.

Calling out motion designers for applying to a post that literally said “I’m hiring designers” is a little odd.

Motion designers are designers. And if the work involves storyboarding/visual development for launch videos, there’s even more overlap.

Maybe specify the discipline you’re hiring for next time? 😅
