Three things happened in my family over the past week.

My father (N. R. Narayana Murthy) received his 40th honorary doctorate, from the University of York. My mother (@SmtSudhaMurty) received her 24th, from IIT Dharwad. And my uncle, Shri Kulkarni (my mother's brother), was awarded the Royal Astronomical Society's Gold Medal in Astronomy.

The Gold Medal has been given since 1824, when Charles Babbage received the first one. It has since gone to Einstein, to Hubble, to Hawking, and to Chandrasekhar, who until now was the only Indian to have received it.

Forty, twenty-four, and a medal two centuries old. My contribution was the photographs.

Congratulations to all three. Still the best teachers I've had.

In 2015, a former Google employee named Sanmay Ved noticed something shocking!

While browsing domains, he saw that Google. com was showing as available to buy.

Out of curiosity, he clicked buy.
And surprisingly, the purchase actually went through.

He bought Google. com for just $12.
For a short time, he technically owned one of the most valuable websites in the world.

But instead of misusing it, he immediately informed Google's security team about the mistake.

Soon after, Google cancelled the transaction and took back the domain.

To thank him for reporting the issue honestly, Google gave him a reward of $6,006.13 through their bug bounty program.

But Sanmay Ved did something unexpected.

Instead of keeping the money, he asked Google to donate it to charity.

The donation went to Art of Living Foundation, which runs free schools for poor children in India.

Impressed by his honesty, Google doubled the amount to $12,012.26.

A small mistake in a system became a big story about honesty!

This is Roopa Moudgil, the fearless IPS officer who once arrested a sitting chief minister.
- Born in Karnataka.
- Cracked UPSC with All India Rank 43 in her very first attempt and joined the IPS in 2000.
- In 2007, she arrested the sitting Chief Minister of MP, Uma Bharti, and shocked the entire political system.
- In 2008, she arrested ex-minister Yavagal and suspended her own subordinate DSP.
- As DCP in Bengaluru, she boldly withdrew 216 unauthorized police orderlies assigned to 81 politicians to end VIP culture.
- In 2013, she became the first woman officer to head Karnataka's Cyber Crime Division.

In her first 20 years of service, she faced defamation cases, political pressure, and threats. She was transferred 43 times in an attempt to harass and break her spirit, but she never bowed down.

🚨 JUST IN: A migratory bird just shattered world records — flying 8,425 miles (13,560 km) NON-STOP across the Pacific without landing once.

The bar-tailed godwit doesn’t stop to eat, drink, or sleep during its migration across the Pacific Ocean. Its journey from Alaska to Australia takes roughly 11 days of continuous flight, covering over 13,000 kilometers through storms, headwinds, and open ocean with zero land beneath it the entire time.

Before departure, it does something almost surgical to its own body. It shrinks its digestive organs down to almost nothing, converting the stomach, intestines, and liver into raw fuel. The bird essentially eats its own gut to make room for fat reserves that will power its wings for nearly two weeks straight.

The brain doesn’t fully sleep either. Half of it stays active while the other half rests, alternating in shifts mid-flight at altitude over the open Pacific. The godwit is simultaneously unconscious and navigating with magnetic field sensitivity that no human instrument in the 18th century could replicate.

What makes this genuinely staggering beyond the physical record is the navigational precision involved. The bird leaves Alaska and arrives in New Zealand with accuracy that would embarrass early GPS systems. It reads Earth’s magnetic field, atmospheric pressure gradients, star positions, and potentially quantum-level compass mechanisms inside its eye that literally let it see magnetic field lines overlaid on its visual field.

Evolution spent millions of years building an aerospace navigation system inside a 300 gram animal.

We spend billions engineering machines that do what this bird does on instinct, fat reserves, and half a sleeping brain.
The longest recorded non-stop flight by a commercial aircraft is around 20 hours.

This bird does 11 days.

भारतीय सेना के श्रेष्ठ कमांडरों में से एक श्रेष्ठ फील्ड कमांडर और सबसे कामयाब सेनानायक माने जाने वाले लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल सगत सिंह राठौड़ (परम विशिष्ट सेवा मेडल) के नाम से चूरू के जिला खेल स्टेडियम का नामकरण करने की घोषणा आज मुख्यमंत्री भजन लाल शर्मा द्वारा की गई है। चूरू के जिम्मेदार यहां उनकी एक अदद प्रतिमा तक नहीं लगवा पाए थे जबकि 2019 में सगत सिंह जी के जन्म शताब्दी वर्ष से हम इस बात की मांग उठा रहे थे। सगत सिंह जी जैसे शूरवीर लाखों में कोई एक ही होते हैं लेकिन चूरू के लोग उन्हें वह सम्मान नहीं दे पाए जिसके वे सच्चे अर्थों में हकदार थे।

लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल सगत सिंह जी को भारतीय सेना में वही स्थान हासिल है जो अमेरिकी सेना में जनरल पैटन और जर्मन सेना में रोमेल को हासिल था।

चूरू जिले की रतनगढ़ तहसील के गांव कुसुमदेसर के निवासी सगत सिंह का जन्म 14 जुलाई 1919 को हुआ। बचपन से ही देशप्रेम का जज्बा रखने वाले सगत सिंह ने स्कूली शिक्षा के दौरान ही इंडियन मिलेट्री एकेडमी ज्वॉइन कर ली और उसके बाद बीकानेर स्टेट फोर्स ज्वॉइन की।

दूसरे विश्व युद्ध में इन्होंने मेसोपोटामिया, सीरिया, फिलिस्तीन के युद्धों में अपने जौहर दिखाए। सन् 1947 में देश आजाद होने पर उन्होंने भारतीय सेना ज्वॉइन करने का निर्णय लिया और सन् 1949 में 3 गोरखा राइफल्स में कमीशंड ऑफिसर के तौर पर उन्हें नियुक्ति मिल गई।

आजादी के बाद सन् 1961 में गोवा मुक्ति अभियान में सगत सिंह के नेतृत्व में ऑपरेशन विजय के अंतर्गत सैनिक कार्यवाही हुई और पुर्तगाली शासन के अंत के बाद गोवा भारतीय गणतंत्र का अंग बना।

1965 में ब्रिगेडियर सगत सिंह को मेजर जनरल के तौर पर नियुक्ति देकर जनरल आफिसर17 माउंटेन डिवीजन की कमांड दे चीन की चुनौती का सामना करने के लिए सिक्किम में तैनात किया गया। वहां चीन की चेतावनी से अविचलित होकर सगत सिंह ने अपना काम जारी रखा और नाथू ला को खाली न करने का निर्णय लिया जिसके फलस्वरूप नाथू ला आज भी भारत के कब्जे में है अन्यथा चीन इस पर कब्जा कर लेता।

सन् 1967 में मेजर जनरल सगत सिंह को जनरल सैम मानेकशॉ ने मिजोरम में अलगाववादियों से लड़ने की जिम्मेदारी दी, जिसे उन्होंने बखूबी निभाया।

1970 में सगत सिंह को लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल के पद पर प्रोन्नति देकर 4 कोर्प्स के जनरल आफिसर कमांडिंग के तौर पर तेजपुर में नियुक्ति दी गई। बांग्लादेश मुक्ति युद्ध में सगत सिंह ने बेहतरीन युद्ध कौशल और रणनीति का परिचय दिया तथा युद्ध इतिहास में पहली बार किसी मैदानी सेना ने छाताधारी ब्रिगेड की मदद से विशाल नदी पार करने का कारनामा कर दिखाया। यह जनरल सगत सिंह के अति साहसी निर्णयों से ही संभव हुआ। इसके बाद पाकिस्तान के जनरल नियाजी ने 93,000 सैनिकों के साथ आत्मसमर्पण किया और बांग्लादेश आजाद हुआ।

बांग्लादेश मुक्ति युद्ध में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाने के कारण उन्हें बांग्लादेश सरकार द्वारा सम्मान दिया गया और परम विशिष्ट सेवा मेडल (पी.वी.एस.एम.) के साथ-साथ भारत सरकार द्वारा देश के तीसरे सबसे बड़े नागरिक सम्मान पद्मभूषण से सम्मानित किया गया। 30 नवंबर 1976 को रिटायर हुए जनरल सगत सिंह ने अपना अंतिम समय जयपुर में बिताया। 26 सितंबर 2001 को इस महान सेनानायक का देहांत हुआ।

बांग्लादेश मुक्ति युद्ध के दौरान वे हेलीकॉप्टर से लड़ाई का जायजा लेने जाते थे और युद्ध स्थल पर ही लैंड कर जाते थे। इस तरह के मुआयने के दौरान ही एक बार उनके हेलीकॉप्टर पर पाकिस्तानी सैनिकों ने गोलियां चलाई जिसमें पायलट भी बुरी तरह जख्मी हो गया। ऎसी स्थिति में सह पायलट ने नियंत्रण सम्हाला और हेलीकॉप्टर वापस अगरतला आया। बाद में जांच में पता चला कि हेलीकॉप्टर में गोलियों से 64 सुराख हो गए लेकिन फिर भी जनरल सगत सिंह पर इसका कोई असर न हुआ और वे एक दूसरा हेलीकॉप्टर लेकर निरीक्षण पर निकल पड़े। उनकी बहादुरी के अनेक किस्से भारतीय सैन्य इतिहास में दर्ज हैं और युद्ध की चर्चाओं में गर्व के साथ सुनाए जाते हैं।

उनके साथ काम कर चुके जनरल सैन्य अधिकारियों के अनुसार, वे भारतीय सेना के बेस्ट फ़ील्ड कमांडर थे। जनरल सगत सिंह आगे बढ़कर अपने सैनिकों का नेतृत्व करते थे और सैनिक उनके लिए जान देने को तैयार रहते थे। वे काम का बंटवारा करने और साथियों को जिम्मेदारी देने में बहुत माहिर थे तथा साथ ही जूनियर्स को मोटीवेट करते थे। गलती हो जाने पर वे जूनियर्स को जिम्मेदार ठहराने की बजाय जिम्मेदारी खुद लेते और गलती को सुधारने की कोशिश करते। मिलिट्री ट्रेनिंग इंस्टीट्यूशंस में आज भी जनरल सगत सिंह राठौड़ के बारे में युवा सैन्य अधिकारियों को पढ़ाया जाता है।

बेटा तू भारत छोड़ कर कहीं और चला जा....
"मुझे एक बजकर 19 मिनट पर पुलिस का कॉल आया। पुलिस ने बताया गया कि मुझे यहां पर एक बाइक मिली है- R-15। बाइक का एक्सीडेंट हुआ है, लड़के की ऑन द स्पॉट मौत हो गई है। मैं दौड़ते-भागते वहां पहुंची। सड़क पर मेरा बच्चा पड़ा था। उसकी हालत बेहद खराब थी। बच्चे की स्पोर्ट्स बाइक के तीन टुकड़े हो गए थे। जैकेट के भी चिथड़े हो रखे थे। मैं 10 मिनट तक चिल्लाती रही। वहां एंबुलेंस खड़ी थी, लेकिन बच्चा वहीं रोड पर पड़ा था। मैं 1.30-35 तक पहुंची थी। मुझसे पहले मेरे ऑफिस की लड़की वहां पहुंच चुकी थी। मेरे एक पड़ोसी भी थे। मेरे जाने के 10 मिनट बाद मेरे बच्चे को उठाया। उसे एंबुलेंस में डालकर दीन दयाल उपाध्याय अस्पताल ले जाया गया। मैं भी पीछे-पीछे पहुंची। हॉस्पिटल में मैं 4 घंटे तक चिल्लाती रही। मैं अपने बच्चे की बॉडी मांग रही थी। मैं अपने बच्चे के लिए लास्ट चांस लेना चाहती थी। मैं अपने खर्चे पर बच्चे को प्राइवेट हॉस्पिटल ले जाना चाहती थी। लेकिन मेरे लाख कहने पर भी किसी ने मेरे बच्चे को नहीं दिया। बाद में उसे मोर्चरी ले गए। फिर पोस्टमार्टम के बाद मुझे मेरे बच्चे की बॉडी मिली। सिंगल मदर होने के कारण मैंने 23 साल तक बच्चे को अकेले पाला था। मैं हमेशा से चाहती थी वो इस कंट्री में नहीं रहे। मैं यहां के हालात, टॉर्चर देखकर शुरू से उसे कहती थी बेटा कहीं और चले जाना।"

ये बातें इन्ना माकन ने कही। इन्ना के 23 वर्षीय बेटे साहिल धनेश्रा की बीते दिनों दिल्ली में हुए एक हादसे में मौत हो गई। इन्ना ने बताया कि जिस एसयूवी से बेटे की बाइक में टक्कर लगी, उस पर पहले से 13 चालान थे। ये सभी चालान ओवर स्पीड के हैं। उन्होंने यह भी बताया कि आरोपी को अंतरिम जमानत मिल गई है। मैं पुलिस से मिली तो मुझे कहा गया कि हमारी ओर से निष्पक्ष जांच होगी।

हादसे में साहिल की मौत की यह घटना और उसके बाद उनकी मां की चीखें सिस्टम पर बड़ा सवाल कर रही है। आखिर हमारी व्यवस्था कब सुधरेगी। दुर्घटनाओं में हो रही इस तरह की मौते कब थमेगी। कब एक मां को यह नहीं कहना पडे़गा कि बेटा तू भारत छोड़ कर कहीं और चला जा।

Pedongi, a mule of the Indian Army Service Corps, 853 AT platoon.. was recognised for bravery and loyalty in the 1971 war, in J&K ops.
She joined the army in May 1962, at the "Pedongi" base in Kalimpong (hoof number 15328).
In 71, carrying "last mile" supplies to forward posts.. her convoy came under Pakistani fire.. and dispersed. 3 mules (including her) were taken POW by enemy forces. They put her to work in their army, carrying loads to posts. She saw an opportunity and escaped with her load of 2 MMGs and ammo boxes. She ran 20 kms and located her platoon! For this extraordinary act, she was written up! Later Gen Rodriguez, COAS, awarded her a ceremonial rug! Instead of the standard 18 yrs of service for mules, she served for 35 years till 1997 and died at 38 next year!
