Southfield A&T & Avondale played an almost even 3rd qtr as Southfield took a 40-35 edge into the 4th. They still led 42-38 when Avondale went on a run; 6' Anchal Watson scored in the post, then Amaria Daniel snagged a defensive rebound & fed Sasha McClellan ahead for a fast break layup, immediately followed by a steal & assist by Khalia Bradley to feed McClellan for an old-fashioned 3-pt play, & finally (after a defensive stop) McClellan grabbed a weakside offensive rebound off a missed 3 & scored to give Avondale a 47-42 lead with 2:25 left.
After an exchange of FTs by Jordyn Ushery of Southfield & Watson, Ushery hit a 3 to cut it to 49-47 with 0:27 left. However, Watson & McClellan went to the line & sealed Avondale's comeback win with 2 FTs each in the final 0:10.1. Avondale wrapped up the Oakland-Blue title with a hard-fought 53-47 victory.
Soph Sasha McClellan (pictured) scored 9 of her team-high 16 points in the 4th qtr, including the final 7 of Avondale's key 9-0 run that gave them their first lead of the game. She was smooth with the ball in her hands, posting a 16-&-11 double-double from the PG position & adding a game-high 4 steals. 6' sr Anchal Watson (pictured in halftime tweet) also came up big in the 4th qtr, scoring 8 points in the final period; she finished with 13-&-8, showcasing her versatility to score with her back to the basket in the post or to face up & attack the basket off the dribble. Sr Amaria Daniel showed the ability to elevate for her jumper on the catch or off the dribble to add 11, & sr Morgan McPherson attacked the paint aggressively & used her physicality to get to the FT line with frequency for 10 more.
Jordyn Ushery (pictured in halftime tweet) was dynamic at the point for Southfield A&T, scoring from beyond the arc, off the pull up & step back, & using her quickness to create space to score off the drive in a multitude of ways despite her size. She scored 20 in the 1st half to get Southfield off to a strong start & finished with a game-high 29.
