I think it's a movie that exposes the fundamental moral confusion of Lucas and those who think like him. They use every contrivance e.g. making all the people on the side he wants you to cheer for beautiful and the side he wants you to boo for supernaturally ugly, and yet that isn't enough if you really think about the moralities of the two positions being taken.

We don't know much about what the rebels were doing to merit the response. Were they like 19th century Russian rebels, robbing banks, assassinating officials, etc or were they more classic maoist insurgents, killing teachers and postmasters, setting up extortion networks to fund theirilitary buildup? Killing prominent members of the neighborhood who refuse to pay their taxes? Just how does the rebellion fund itself while in the insurgency phase?

Why would you support a rebellion that blithely and obviously has as its goal the complete breakdown of society and a generation at least of civil war when it's fucking obvious thats the only thing you get out of their policies? What is it about the rebels political program that is better than the empires?

I just watch the movies and tend to regard the rest of the assorted claptrap as an attempt to cope with and justify lucases moral confusions and idiocies. (Which apparently Disney does too as they're non-cannon now). In the Republic, we see slavery as normal. In *a new hope*, no slaves.

More to the point, a galactic civil war of all against all would make destroying one planet meaningless in the balance. It would involve hundreds or thousands or tens of thousands of alderaans. What is it the rebels are fighting for? Restoration of a Republic that was owned and run by aristocratic space wizards who were ok with slavery and were clearly hyperinflating the currency?

@RobertoAndres @trackingcosts No other country offers fixed rate mortgages. Most places have variations of ARMs as the default mortgage. Try talking about something you know about.

@trackingcosts When I was buying my first house in 2006 I was shocked at how many of my tech coworkers had ARMs or even interest only ARMS. But those people paid no real penalty for doing so. It wasn't the ARMs that caught people out it was the equity crash
