This moving article on @UmarKhalidJNU in prison prompts a simple question: if he really has incited terrorism, why not prove it in a court of law? Why deny him the basic right of any Indian citizen accused of a crime, the right to a fair trial? Languishing six years behind bars, without a chance to defend himself legally, is a travesty of justice and a blot on our democracy. I think the people of India have a right to know why.

First the Madras HC openly criticised the SC for keeping a matter pending for years.

Now the Allahabad HC has remarked that a series of Supreme Court judgments has created a chaotic legal situation.

It appears the era of criticism flowing only one way may be coming to an end.

The #Allahabad high court remarked that police officers in #UttarPradesh appear to be more loyal to the ruling dispensation than to the Constitution. Stressing that constitutional governance cannot be held hostage to individual convenience or expediency, the court said the state machinery must remain accountable to the law and the Constitution rather than to any political establishment in power.
