I've had instances where I called ahead and asked for assistance at the gate with my infant and been told that it's against airline policy to give assistance for parents with infants when traveling alone.

Traveling with an infant is challenging. Less because of your baby, but because most airlines have terrible policies for parents traveling with babies. From breast milk carry on limits (depending on the country) to unaccommodating seating and lack of special assistance.
