Zeena Koda, in her interview for Variety about 10 AAPI Music Executives Making an Impact in 2024 told that The Recording Academy lauched the Gold Alliance aimed at giving visibility to AAPI artists.
The founder of Gold Alliance is Kevin Nishimura, who is currently the Chief Business Officer of Kakao Entertainment Global and Chief Operating Officer of SM and Kakao Entertainment America.
Oh lord. Now you see here's the thing. These people are not understanding one thing. Asian representation in music is a cause worth fighting for. But representation stops being meaningful when it comes at the cost of segregation. Creating spaces for Asian artists should never mean confining them to a separate lane instead of allowing them to compete as equals.
You cannot claim to champion Asian representation while boxing in the biggest Asian artist in the world. And when that very artist tells you that this approach is not representation but limitation, it's time to stop defending the system and start reflecting on whether you're advancing equality or simply repackaging exclusion.

seventeen has quite literally never took a stand or stood up for anything in a significant way once in their career so i’m not surprised you’d think BTS being openly against the recording academy’s xenophobia and racism is something to be ashamed of
We are on day 4 of the news cycle and articles praising BTS and criticizing @RecordingAcad are still dropping every hour, global media is whacking them everywhere you look, academy members keep crashing out and making everything worse. BTS destroyed them with three sentences.
Mind you the Recording Academy has been accused with some serious allegations by the former CEO (replaced by Harvey Mason Jr.)
Deborah Dugan became the Recording Academy's first female President and CEO in August 2019. Just five months later, days before the 2020 Grammys, she was placed on administrative leave following alleged workplace misconduct complaints, and Harvey Mason Jr. was appointed interim CEO.
Dugan filed an EEOC complaint alleging sexual harassment, gender discrimination, conflicts of interest, financial mismanagement, and irregularities in the Grammy nomination process.
At some point, the music industry needs to ask itself why artists continue to chase validation from institutions instead of the people who actually sustain careers. When questions about transparency and governance have been raised around an institution over the years, it's a reminder that industry accolades should never outweigh the trust and connection artists build with their audiences.

this sht goes deep. what exactly are bts up against?😐
Zeena Koda was having a mental breakdown on ig screaming bts “tore them down” “for media attention” instead of just accepting the category she helped create while this is her blatantly ignoring their existence and impact
Zeena Koda and Frankie Yaptinchay talking about Asian Representation in Music.
It's fascinating to watch people talk endlessly about "Asian representation" while refusing to acknowledge the artists who fundamentally changed how the global music industry viewed Asian acts.
You cannot have an honest conversation about the globalization of Asian music market without mentioning BTS. Whether you like them or not, they broke barriers that many in the industry once insisted couldn't be broken. They topped charts, sold out stadiums, reshaped the industry's perception of non-English music, made stadiums all around the globe sing their songs word for word, bar for bar and made institutions to take Asian artists seriously.
So when people celebrate this new era of "representation" while conveniently leaving out one of the most influential acts in that story, it doesn't feel like representation. It feels like selective history.
