From Dialogue to Partnership: High Commissioner’s Week at the Court of St James’s
It has been another marathon week; run Kenyan 🇰🇪 style.
i ) Strengthening multilateralism:
The High Commissioner @MMakoloo paid a courtesy call on the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Secretariat, H.E Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey @SGCommonwealth where he reaffirmed Kenya’s steadfast resolve to support the Commonwealth’s transformative vision. The discussions reaffirmed the centrality of collective action, #inclusivity and maintaining #trust in multilateral organizations such as the @commonwealthsec in ways that make them deliver socioeconomic dividends to humanity.
ii) Delivering the Kenya 🇰🇪- UK 🇬🇧 Strategic Partnership.
Amb. Makoloo met the Africa Director at @FCDO, Ms Kate Foster and the Head of the East Africa Department, Ms Vicky Seymour to discuss concrete steps for implementing the new agreement and maintaining the momentum on the excellent progress made in the last year.
iii) Enhancing Climate Action:
The High Commissioner joined a select group of Heads of Missions brought together by the FCDO’s Special Representative for Climate to reflect on the #UNFCCC #COP30 held in Brazil last year and how to enhance momentum on agreed actions towards COP31 to be held in Türkiye later this year. Amb. Makoloo reiterated Kenya’s continued global leadership on climate action including the urgent implementation of the African Leaders Nairobi Declaration at the inaugural Africa Climate Summit in 2023. He further called on the inclusion of #Youth in the global conversations.
iv) Collective Voice on Common Goals:
Balozi Makoloo also attended the periodic plenary of the African Ambassadors accredited to the Court of St. James’s where issues of mutual interest for African countries were discussed. The meeting was convened by the Dean of Africa Group.
v) Shaping #narratives about Africa
Amb. Makoloo had a meeting with Ms @tighistiamare the Director of @AfricaProg at the Chatham House where both underscored the urgency of telling the full story of and about #Africa. Africa’s #agency in international affairs especially at a moment like now is critical. Ensuring the #voice and #representation of her #Youth is urgent for co-creating sustainable solutions for humanity.
Pleased to meet a delegation of Chinese investors visiting the country led by George Zhu Zhaojiang, President of Transion Holdings- Chinas largest Mobile Phone manufacturer with Brands including- Tecno, Infinix and Itel. The representatives included GE Health Care China, M&G Stationery, ImmunoChina, Real Kung Fu (The most influential Chinese fast food brand in China), CIMC Shilianda (Largest Maritime Logistics Company in China) and Clean Coal Energy China. The Principal Secretary State Department for Foreign Affairs Dr. A. Korir SingOei addressed 58 newly recruited Foreign Service Cadets at the Foreign Service Academy.
The cadets are undergoing an intensive 12 week-long induction program covering diplomacy, foreign policy, diaspora affairs, international law, economic diplomacy, government operations, national security, and soft skills like grooming, emotional intelligence, digital literacy, and conflict resolution.
Dr. SingOei urged the new cadets to embrace innovation in modern diplomacy. He reminded the cadets of their critical responsibility in articulating Kenya's foreign policy, particularly in diaspora engagement and consular services.
Ag. Director General Amb. Patrick S. Wamoto praised the cadets for their dedication and urged them to use social media responsibly to promote Kenya's diplomatic image. The cadets are undertaking the foundation level training of the newly released Foreign Service Academy curriculum; a significant milestone in the Academy's structured approach to diplomatic training.
Emphasis was placed on the importance of discipline, ethical conduct, cultural intelligence, and commitment to Kenya’s values throughout their careers.
We are following with deep concern the escalating situation in the Middle East that has the potential to spiral out of control with grievous implications for regional and global peace and security. We urge Israel and Iran to exercise restraint and seek peaceful resolution to the prevailing challenge that has triggered the current escalation in line with the Charter of the United Nations. 1/ Today the UN General Assembly member states adopted a historic resolution tabled by Kenya and Tanzania on behalf of the African Group proclaiming 7th July as the World Kiswahili Language Day and promoting multilingualism as a core value of the United Nations.

For the second day running, the State Department for Foreign Affairs, the National Focal Point for the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) @IORAofficial, attended the 26th IORA Senior Committee of Senior Officials (CSO) held virtually.
The Kenyan Delegation, led by Amb. Jackline Yonga, Director, Multilateral Affairs, joined the other 23 Member States and 12 Dialogue Partners in discussing the update on the Concept Paper on Climate Change amongst other areas of review.
During submissions, Kenya called for expedited operatinalization of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for support of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) within IORA Member States that came into force in 2022.
Kenya also called for the support of the Chair and that of like-minded member states in creating a comprehensive framework within the IORA region in order to enhance digital trade and streamline cross-border transactions, ultimately fostering better economic integration and growth within the region.
The 27th IORA CSO will be held later in the year in Sri Lanka ahead of the meeting of the Council of Ministers.

Kenya’s candidate, Mr. Timothy Ekesa has been elected to the Committee on the Rights of the Child for the period 2025 to 2029. The election took place during the twentieth meeting of States parties to the Convention on the Rights of the Child held on 23rd May 2024, in New York. He garnered 134 votes, the second highest number of votes.
The elections were hotly contested by 18 candidates, 11 from Africa vying for the 9 available seats. Mr. Ekesa was elected alongside eight other candidates from Mauritania, Zambia, Belgium, Bhutan, Ethiopia, Georgia and Moldova to replace those whose terms will expire on 28 February 2025.
Kenya is committed to the promotion and protection of children’s rights and is strongly convinced that Mr. Ekesa will contribute substantially to the Committee given his vast experience in child rights advocacy.
