On The Cultural Frontline @bbcworldservice today alongside Pussy Riot(?!), Han Kang, and the Belgrade Museum of Contemporary Art, talking Puerto Rico, Maria, @Faniamusic, and PR's other coast, NYC. I'm at 17:22, but the whole show is pretty excellent! https://t.co/nJOrsczan0
@zunguzungu Also, statehood would probably open PR up to even more predatory capitalism than it's already subject to, not to mention many cultural issues. Highly recommend to read "War on all Puerto Ricans" by @NelsonADenis!
@zunguzungu I think it's fair to say that no one takes the referenda seriously because they're not binding and Washington doesn't seem to want to change anything anyway.
Over 33% of PR's childbearing women -- most from poor, rural areas -- were subjected to sterilization surgery without their informed consent during the 50's and 60's. The fed govm't also used this population to experiment/trial the birth control pill. https://t.co/KQat0mDpyr
Beginning with the US invasion of Puerto Rico in 1898, the fed govm't decided the island was "overcrowded" and implemented a series of programs to control its population. One was incentivizing the mass migration to U.S. cities. The other was mass sterilization.
Ah little ships, I know your weariness!
I know the sea-green shadows of your dream.
For I have loved the cities of the sea,
and desolations of the old days I
have loved: I was a wanderer like you
and I have broken down before the wind.

@davidneustadt@RossBarkan Thanks, I appreciate all. The logical thing is to check with the nursing home, but they've been stretched thin, of course. Good to know there was a procedure in place for this sort of thing, though. Thanks for the info!
@davidneustadt@RossBarkan Are you saying that even if the death certificate lists "natural causes," they theoretically would have checked that against some list of people who tested positive? I don't want to indict anybody, but I would like to feel fairly confident he's been counted!
@davidneustadt@RossBarkan No idea, to be honest. I'd hope that's not the case, but it's strange to me that they wouldn't list COVID as his cause of death when he was actually able to get tested back in April. What was the test for, then?
