How can you know if the blood you’re given comes from an unvaccinated donor? You can’t.

No standard testing checks donated blood for mRNA or spike proteins from COVID vaccines — leaving patients completely in the dark.

A Vanderbilt University Medical Center study documented 15 cases over two years: patients — many of them children and teenagers — and their families refused standard transfusions and demanded blood only from unvaccinated donors. The wait caused serious harm: delayed surgeries, severe anemia, shock, and worse, while families scrambled for directed donations from known unvaccinated friends or relatives.

Early in the pandemic, blood centers screened donors for recent COVID vaccination and discouraged the newly vaccinated. Those precautions have now been dropped.

Patients have the right to know their donor’s vaccination status. In a life-or-death emergency, your blood is your lifeline — transparency and real informed consent must never be optional.
