The hardest part of scaling deep tech isn't the science.

It's the moment you realize the process that worked perfectly in your lab produces garbage at 10x the volume.

I've been through this twice. The variables that didn't matter at lab scale — humidity, substrate temperature, line speed, operator variance — suddenly matter enormously. And the instinct is always to go back to the lab and solve it there first.

That instinct will kill your timeline.

The only way to solve a manufacturing problem is in manufacturing. You have to be on the floor, running experiments in the actual environment, with the actual equipment, at something close to actual volume. Although it's slower and more expensive in the short term, It's also the only thing that works.

We commissioned a 2 million square foot dynamic glass production facility in Taiwan and achieved greater than 90% device yield — three times better than our nearest competitor. That didn't happen in a lab. It happened because we stopped treating the factory floor like a place to validate lab results and started treating it as its own R&D environment.

Deep tech founders: if you're waiting until your lab process is perfect before you engage manufacturing partners, you're already behind.

@shane_riordan Terrible defense. He had to take a ton of risks to try and score 35 a game.

@jacobinfante24 Cutler was fine. His stats put him slightly above average, but the bears D those years was not very good, giving up almost 25 points per game. He was constantly having to sling the ball around to play catch up.
