Meir Baruchin, an Israeli history teacher and anti-war activist, revealed how he was arrested in October and imprisoned in solitary confinement in November after he posted a photo online of Palestinians killed by the Israeli army on 7 October in opposition to the war on Gaza.
Sudan now has the highest rate of internal displacement in the world, with 9 million people internally displaced.
Despite the mounting human toll, the international response has failed to ensure aid access and civilian protection.
Sudan is now the largest displacement crisis on the continent, from multiple armed conflicts and mass violence - in Khartoum, Kordofan, and Darfur. This year, numbers have leapfrogged Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia, and even DRC. It's a tragic title.
The former AU-UN peacekeeping mission here was dissolved in 2020, and conflict resolution seems far from reality right now. There seems to be little capacity globally for conflict management with such divided politics at the UN Security Council and without yet effective, aligned support from all regional and continental powers, despite many unexplored opportunities. The crisis here needs to be quickly pushed from 'the end of the beginning' to 'the beginning of the end', but time is running out.
Without an ending or limiting of these conflicts, the #humanitarian catastrophe will continue to haemorrhage and destabilise a fragile region. The humanitarian response to #Sudan must be better supported and facilitated.
This month, our own emergency response inside Sudan to the post-April crises will surpass assisting 100,000 displaced people in White Nile, Al-Jezira, and Gedaref, through multipurpose cash, education-in-emergencies, sanitation, and shelter. More than numbers though, I'm proud of our team to be moving forward on multiple operational fronts this month:
- resuming emergency responses in West Darfur and South Kordofan, and hopefully starting responses in Sennar
- making a further tranche of small grants to grassroots response efforts that support displaced people
- field testing new solutions on digital vouchers and digital communications with crisis-affected communities (via WhatsApp)
- introduction of specific social and protective support for displaced people
- clearance and distribution of over 10,000 relief kits now imported through Port Sudan
We're moving to our second phase of emergency response - not just at a larger scale, but with new features/services and also for people in more areas.
This is one of the most serious and complex humanitarian emergencies in the world right now, but is seemingly still at the bottom of most foreign policy and international news agendas.
We need greater global and public interest in supporting frontline relief efforts (grassroots, diaspora and international) and in diplomatically driving an end to the conflicts, improved humanitarian access, and safe passage and proper support for people fleeing the violence.

It’s infuriating and awkward as hell, but it’s been 100 days now and someone should say it. The global humanitarian financing system is unapologetically racist. As is the international protection system.
A simple illustration …
It’s a tale of two capitals, both hit by airstrikes as large-scale war explodes.
One is in Europe. No expense spared; billions of aid dollars offered in days. Their refugees welcome.
One is in Africa. We need to grovel for months for millions of aid dollars to respond. Their refugees unwelcome, passports shredded, visas not issued, legal stay in other countries diminished, pushbacks and deportations, and no means or help to exit the killzone.
Tell me I’m wrong here?
Tell me if this is a world you’re OK being a global citizen in?
If the multilateral system really is interested in what it says it is, then the G20 and UN GA needs to redress this. Intergovernmental bodies mandated to oversee aid and protection need to speak up and unequivocally. Global citizens need to care more, demand better.
The point isn’t that one of these crises should get less and the other more—both are underfunded and need more. It’s just, one is clearly distressed, desperate, and dying, yet deeply neglected.
Musk's new tweet limit will have a major impact on human rights reporting, citizen journalism, the democratic flow of information and campaigns to stop atrocities and save lives in real time.
Musk is killing off users who use twitter for social justice, not profit or status.
#Sudan, still grappling with immense suffering, is gradually slipping off the global agenda. Waning attention from policymakers, media, and the public altogether means that potential solutions to reduce this suffering are also neglected.
#Art has a profound ability to evoke emotions and forge connections. Combined with the reach of social #media, it can spark #empathy and #compassion on an unprecedented scale.
Beyond mere informative content on formal and social media platforms, thought-provoking artworks and compelling #storytelling have the potential to be game-changers. They can captivate and sustain global public interest, enrich narratives and awareness, and offer a more human and relatable perspective on the situation to audiences worldwide.

While #Sudan does not export Coca Cola, the country is the source of most of the world's supply of Gum Arabic, critical to products ranging from Coke to M&Ms. It would be ironic if it took a world Coke shortage to motivate the international community to act constructively.
