Coaches: The best part of working with kids is forming meaningful relationships. Learn the kids you work with & coach them as people first. Show them you care. Build mutual trust & respect. Use the game to teach them that the ups & downs of life are a lot more than any sport!
Players: The best thing you can do for yourself to start a season is to be in great shape. Coaches notice who can withstand the physicality of the game & who can’t. When you’re a player who isn’t quickly exhausted, that puts you well ahead of others. It’s just plain conditioning.
Coaching is a calling. It’s endless hours & dedication. It’s often thankless & solitary, but still a calling. People want to walk in off the street & “try coaching”. Good luck. You can try sushi or crawfish. But you can’t try coaching. Coaching is something you live, not try!
The best way to impress a coach is by being an unselfish team player. Coaches care more about your character than your stats. They can tell if you care more about your stats than you do about team success. If you're a selfish player, they won't care how good your stats are.
