I see a lot of back and forth on my timeline about Man United’s transfer debt, lack of cash etc.

Even if many commentaries mean well — using this as an excuse for poor support of Carrick this summer does miss the mark.

Here is why:
🔺First of all, just as a starting point: Nobody knowledgeable claim that it would be impossible for United to spend more money. That would simply not be correct. United is far from a point where nobody would lend them money even if the available RCF is not enough.

So the question is if it is sensible for United to spend more. Not if the club ”can” spend more money.

🔺Second of all, regardless what the club’s financial situation is — MUFC must sign left back, at one point or another, right?

Supposedly, the plan is now to sign one next summer.

🔺Let’s say that this LB is Lewis Hall and that he will cost £60m.

If we look at how United structure the club’s deals — on average app. 40% is paid up front (<12 months), 30% is paid within 12-24 months and 30% is paid within 24-36 months (see below graph).

If Lewis Hall was signed for £60m in the summer of 2026, we would in other words face the following payment structure:
26/27 — £24m
27/28 — £18m
28/29 — £18m
29/30 — 0m

If Hall is signed next summer, we would face this payment structure instead:
26/27 — 0m
27/28 — £24m
28/29 — £18m
29/30 — £18m

In practice — the ACTUAL cost — for signing Lewis Hall a year earlier is just 2.8m. The math behind that is quite advanced, but assuming United can lend money for 5% the cost today for signing Hall in 26’ is 24+18/1.05+18/1.05^2=57.5m and the cost today for signing Hall in 27’ is 24/1.05+18/1.05^2+18/1.05^3=54.7. And the gain from signing him a year later is in other words 57.5m-54.7m=2.8m.

2.8m. This is indisputable.

🔺This is the distinction that is easy to miss. It is different in relation to other choices on the transfer market.

If both Andrey Santos and Elliott Anderson perform — exactly — on the same level and for the same period of time, signing Santos is like 68m cheaper than Anderson. You save not 2.8m, but 68m from signing Santos. 100%, if you want to argue that United couldn’t afford to sign Andersson instead of Santos — use the cash flow argument, cost of debt argument, as an excuse for someone (but surely not the Glazers since it’s their debt).

But you can’t use that excuse for United wanting to sign Lewis Hall in 27’ instead of 26’.

Trust me, I am a lawyer and not an economist — but if Ratcliffe’s life 100% was MUFC 24/7/365 — United does not put off trying to sign Lewis Hall one year for cash flow reasons. Its lack of support. It’s lackadaisical ownership. Just like we have seen from the Glazers.

Of course, at least — as long as — keeping Luke Shaw does NOT work just as well as signing Lewis Hall to share the duties with Shaw would. In that scenario waiting a year can be advantages because we keep our options open. Perhaps we will spot the next Roberto Carlos and sign him for 5m instead.

I have often thought that one of the ways to reduce cost as the NHS would be to centralise purchasing for all items from cotton wool buds to MRI machines.
These days Amazon boast that you can place an order at 10 am and it can be delivered by 4pm the same day.
Imagine a government contract awarded to Amazon to store in one central warehouse all NHS materials . Allowing every hospital in the UK to send orders for supplies.
Also imagine as an example of one item, how many cotton wool buds are sitting in stock at each and every hospital in the country. It will run into millions, whereas using the just in time ordering this stock pile would be massively reduced.
Further to this (and I maybe wrong) each hospital have buyers for all supplies. They are able to use any supplier they choose and I am sure not at the best prices . Centralised supplies offers great negotiation power with suppliers.

I look at Edwin's resume and it just fits what we need right now.

7 years as Ajax CEO, took them from chaos to a Champions League semi-final in 2019, built that De Ligt, De Jong, Van de Beek team while actually balancing the books and playing proper football.

And before that, 4 titles and a Champions League as a United player, he knows what this club is supposed to feel like.

I respect Berrada and what he did commercially at City, but for me he's a City Football Group suit, not a football man. We've got a CEO who talks about "value" and refuses to go over £100m while Ipswich outspend us.

I want someone who understands football first, business second. That's Edwin.

Fans don't care about 2027. They care about Everton this week & the rest of this season. Sales & a lack thereof for senior players restricted incomings? Ok.

Lewis Hall is the priority LB long term? That shouldn't prevent 'global scouting & data driven player profiling' identifying one single player that could've helped now.

I can rationalise the majority of decisions - even when I don't agree with them, but not addressing a clear need in any capacity feels like a potentially pivotal error.

Real Madrid: Member owned, Bernabeu €1.2bn rebuild, net debt €8m (2024 accounts).

Man Utd PLC: Owners took £1bn+ out interest+dividends+shares 2005-2024, gross debt £515m still same as 2005, OT last rebuild 2006, 2 star hygiene.

Same revenue: Utd €650m, Real €840m, Bayern €700m.

Difference: One spends on stadium and team. Other spends on debt and owner.

You can't cost-cut your way to title. You can only cost-cut your way to 15th. Then fans pay £66 to watch it.

If the wheels fall off this season because of a lack of squad depth, the *majority* of the frustration needs to be pointed at INEOS.

Less so at Michael Carrick. The manager isn't a punchbag for the ownership's failures.

We knew in May that Lewis Hall wasn’t going to the World Cup, yet waited until #NUFC had sold Gordon, Tonali and Bruno G before enquiring.

We then waited until deadline day to enquire about Aït-Nouri, despite knowing for two weeks that Hall was impossible.

I honestly believe INEOS planned to sign three midfielders and pocket the rest. #MUFC enquired about two left-backs that they knew would likely be unavailable at the time of enquiring just so they could say they tried.

If signing a LB was genuinely the plan, we would’ve moved earlier. The only money spent this summer is what we earned from qualifying for the UCL. We could’ve spent far more...

I’m all for not wasting money for the sake of it, and I think the business we’ve done is good. But you honestly can’t tell me there wasn’t an available LB out there who would’ve improved us.
