Barbie, let’s be real. You don’t have a theological interest. You have a geopolitical interest. That said, #2, Christian Zionists only start appealing to Sola Scriptura when they lose the debate on Church History. In a conversation about what the church has historically believed - which is what this discussion is that you’re interrupting on behalf of Israel - it should be no surprise the topic is church history. What the Bible teaches is a different conversation, which I also love to have. So let’s do that.

Your summation of the Dispensationalist claim, that Jews “remain the beloved regarding election” is imprecise. You just picked a proof text to summarize and said “that’s all we believe.” It isn’t. The entire controversy, the argument at hand is this:

**That unbelieving Jews remain in God’s Covenant as His “chosen people,” and have access to those Covenant promises and blessings through Abraham, irrespective of their unbelief; that without Jesus, they have a right to the various promises of a Biblical Covenant, those inaccessible to Gentiles on account of their ethnic lineage**

That’s the controversy, which is as unbiblical as it is brand-new and unhistoric. Now comes the sermon.

You’re quoting Romans 11:29. But you have got “Jew Goggles” on; only seeing verses you want to see, because you have a Jew-centered hermeneutic, where Jews are always the main character. What you LEFT OUT was the verse right before it:

Romans 11:28, “As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake.”

Enemies. That’s present tense.

So then what’s the ‘beloved’ part? Their history, the Patriarchs, the Law and Prophets, and Redemptive History - it’sa heritage that can’t be taken. Because of that which is past-tense. This is the same as Americans will always have an affinity for the French for helping us win our independence, but at the same time, they’re cheese-eating surrender monkeys.

In order to read that verse, you SKIPPED OVER the part about unbelieving Jews being utterly CUT OFF from God (vs 24) and SEVERED from Abraham, as Paul likens them to branches broken off and wasting on the ground, unable to take part in the Covenant or recieve its promises. This is the chapter that puts “replacement”in Replacement Theology, because they were replaced in that tree by Gentiles (vs 19).

Romans 11 teaches that Jews cannot recieve any promises or Covenant blessings from God UNTIL they stop persisting in unbelief (vs 23). That’s the entire controversy.

The chapter is kryptonite to the Dispensational view. It teaches that Jews can be saved the same way as anyone else, and until then, they are entitled to nothing: no promises, no blessings, not an acre of land. Cut off. Severed.

And when they DO repent and believe in Jesus one day, they will be equal heirs to Abraham with Gentiles who are declared the REAL children of Abraham in Galatians 3:7. Until then, as Paul explains in Romans 9:6-8, unbelieving Jews don’t even count as Israel.

Has God reserved promises for Jews apart from Jesus? Hell no. That’s what 2 Corinthians 1:20 says, “ALL THE PROMISES of God are in Christ, yes and amen.”

Galatians 3 bodyslams the idea Jews maintain blessings outside of Christ:

“There is neither Jew nor Greek…if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.”

Who gets Abraham’s promise? Christians only. We are the children of Abraham, and unbelieving Jews are cut off.

No Jesus? No promises.

Joel, this is either a blatant attempt to twist the Church Fathers to support a heresy invented in a 19th century Irish basement OR you are genuinely unlearned on the difference between HISTORIC Premillennialism (a valid and orthodox eschatology I share) and DISPENSATIONAL Premillennialism (the grotesque novelty that you hold to.

The Fathers held the former, Historic Premillennialism, which said that in the Eschaton, off the the future, ethnic Jews would be brought to faith in Christ, redeemed through conversion and repentance of Rabbinic Judaism, and saved just like anyone else. At that time, God would then draw them to Zion.

I believe that. That’s normal. That’s what you’re seeing among the Fathers.

But the Church Fathers were also ARCH COVENANT THEOLOGIANS, which you refer to as “Replacement Theology,” who - down the line - believed the Church replaced ethnic Jews as True Israel. All of them. Every last one. NONE of the church Fathers would have dared suggest that Jews remain in Covenant with God outside of faith in Jesus.

Which brings me to Dispensational Premillennialism - your belief - thought up by a schismatic cult in 1821. It differs from the non-heretical Historic Premillennialism because it says Jews REMAIN in Covenant with God DESPITE their rejection of Christ, and still have access to the Covenant’s blessings and Promises reserved exclusively for Christians (for example, Genesis 12:3).

Christians Zionists, like yourself, argue that because they are still “God’s chosen people” they are entitled to God’s blessings, favor, and promises - including land in Palestine. Here is where you depart from the Fathers.

The Church Fathers would have anathematized you to hell for suggesting Jews are the “chosen people” or that they’re entitled to God’s promises PRE-conversion. I can only provide a few citations here because there’s not room, so I’ll provide just a few and tell people to research it themselves. They’ll find the same.

Justin Martyr said, “For the true spiritual Israel, and descendants of Judah, Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham…are we who have been led to God through this crucified Christ.” (Dialogue with Trypho, ch. 1).

Further, “all who through Him have fled for refuge to the Father, constitute the blessed Israel. But you [to the Jews], having understood none of this, and not being prepared to understand, since you are the children of Jacob after the fleshly seed, expect that you shall be assuredly saved. But that you deceive yourselves in such matters…”

Tertullian said (in Prescription Against Heretics), “The Jews had formerly been in covenant with God; but being afterward cast off on account of their sins, they began to be without God."

They unanimously rejected the idea that anyone but Christians were entitled to any of Abraham’s promises.

But where else you REALLY stretch it is suggesting that the rise of Darbyism and birth of Dispensationalism is the result of the Fathers being rediscovered. That’s absurd, Joel.

When word began to surface that this bizarre “Jews are still chosen” teaching was born by the Plymouth Brethren, EVERY Christian tradition rejected it for one reason: Its novel. New. Never seen before.

When Spurgeon was asked what he thought of it, he said, “We hold to no new views concerning the future, and we have no desire for any.”

WG Moorhead, a Presby historian and contemporary of Darby, said “The Dispensational scheme is a modern construction, unknown to the Reformers and unknown to the early Church.”

BB Warfield said of Dispensationalism, “It is not a product of exegesis, but an imposition upon Scripture. Its scheme is arbitrary and artificial.”

In short, nobody cares if you believe God WILL save Jews by faith and then draw them to Zion. That’s true for every nation. Amen. But making the hop, skip, and jump to “Therefore Christ-deniers remain God’s chosen people, entitled to Covenant promises,” that’s a heresy all those names explicitly rejected.
