IT’S TIME TO TAKE ON THE GREED OF THE FOSSIL FUEL INDUSTRY

The vast majority of scientists tell us that the climate crisis is fueling heat waves and extreme weather across the globe. Donald Trump tells us that climate change is a “hoax.” Who is right? Let’s look at the facts.

The last eleven years have been the hottest eleven years on record. The last three years have been the hottest three years on record. 2026 will be one of the warmest years on record, and most scientists believe 2027 will be the warmest year in recorded history.

This summer alone, Europe has seen three record heat waves – including the continent’s worst on record that killed more than 10,000 people – and is about to experience its FOURTH of the year. The United States, which has already seen two record heat waves that exposed hundreds of millions of people to dangerous temperatures, is currently experiencing its third major heat wave of the year. This heat is exacerbating drought conditions across the world, including the worst spring drought on record in the United States and some of Europe’s driest conditions on record this summer.

We are seeing massive wildfires across the northern hemisphere, including hundreds of wildfires in the United States and Canada earlier this month that created dangerous air quality for Americans across the country. Huge fires that are burning right now in Oregon, Washington and western Canada will create even more dangerous air across the United States over the coming week. In Europe, France and Spain are seeing unprecedented wildfires that have forced more than 300,000 people to evacuate their homes. Major fires are also burning in Portugal, Greece, Italy and Turkey.

We are seeing new and extraordinarily dangerous flash flooding become normal across the United States. Alaska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia have all seen record rainfalls this summer that have driven dangerous flash flooding events. Texas Hill Country just saw a 1,000-year rainfall event, its second in two years, that dumped almost a year’s worth of rainfall in just a few days. Missouri just saw a 1,000-year rainfall event that forced emergency responders to rescue campers from cabin rooftops and trees. And it’s not just the United States dealing with extreme flooding – massive floods displaced thousands earlier this summer in West Africa. Recent rainfall in Pakistan killed more than 100 people. And just last week, enormous flooding in India displaced more than 700,000 people.

In the face of this extraordinary and devastating reality, Donald Trump continues to protect his fossil fuel billionaire friends that are driving this global crisis. Our job is to take on his ignorance and the greed of the fossil fuel industry by transforming our energy system away from fossil fuels to energy efficiency and sustainable sources of power. If we are to provide a healthy and habitable planet for future generations, this is a struggle that must be won.
