Ghana should have some of the cheapest fuel prices in the region, but here is why it remains expensive. Ghana currently produces more crude oil than it consumes around 180,000 barrels per day compared to a national demand of just 105,000 barrels per day and we even have local refining capacity. However, back in the mid-2000s under the NPP, a 25-year petroleum contract was signed with private companies that allocated over 80% of our production internationally. Receiving less than 20% forces us to import most of our refined fuel, leaving us vulnerable whenever global shocks hit. In early 2026, Parliament ratified an extension of these contracts through 2040 something you won't hear on TV.
