US investors are set to invest Rwf33 billion in VINMUSA Vineyard Estate, an integrated vineyard, winery, and hospitality project spanning Musanze, Burera, and Nyabihu districts near Volcanoes National Park.

• The estate will cover about 22 hectares of vineyards and include a winery, nine luxury guest retreats, three suites, a Welcome Centre and Tasting Gallery, and an Experience Pavilion in Kinigi.

• At full development, VINMUSA expects to produce about 90,000 bottles of wine annually, with the first harvest expected about three years after planting.

• The project is testing different elevations, volcanic soils, and microclimates across three sites in Kinigi, Lake Burera, and Mount Karisimbi to develop wines with a distinct Rwandan character.

• The Mount Karisimbi vineyard, planned at about 2,700 metres above sea level, is expected to become Africa’s highest-elevation fine-wine vineyard.

• The first phase, estimated at Rwf14.7 billion, will focus on the Kinigi site, including three guest retreats, a winery, Welcome Centre, Tasting Gallery, and Experience Pavilion.

• More than Rwf1.6 billion has already been invested in land acquisition, vineyard preparation, planting, technical development, architecture, and engineering.

• More than 30 local vineyard workers have so far been employed, with the project expected to create permanent and seasonal jobs across viticulture, winemaking, hospitality, tourism, and estate operations.

• The project is also working with youth and women’s agricultural cooperatives and exploring partnerships for viticulture training.
