We started our poetry unit this week in second grade. The first step is to be immersed in tons of examples.

Second grade read Snowflake Bentley back in January. We have been waiting for the perfect day ever since to catch and observe snowflakes. @MrsDauenhauer1

Boom! Clap! In second grade we played this fast paced game to practice both long and short vowel sounds. @MrsDauenhauer1

Some owls have adaptations to help them survive in the deciduous forest. Today we dissected owl pellets to try and figure out what these nocturnal birds are eating. @MrsDauenhauer1

Our next habitat is the Rainforest. In this game, students had to run find an animal in the habitat and bring it back using a tweezer. Guess what color animals were left on the mat. I'll give you a hint: camouflage was at work. Thank you @FXH_SLP for the help!

Why do children across school yards play Rock, Paper, Scissors? We read The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors by Drew Daywalt to find out. Of course, the main characters made a special appearance during the read aloud.

These authors helped each other with their personal narratives by communicating what was done well as well as what can be improved. We are learning that we are better writers when we listen to each other.

We had a great week in second grade at FH Hegarty! We closed out Hispanic Heritage Month with a visit from author Adriana Devers. Then we had our annual Winner's Walk to raise money for @NextGenFace!

October is Fire Safety Month. Second grade was very excited to get a visit from the Island Park For Department!

In second grade we are learning about aquatic habitats, so we took a trip to Masone Beach to explore our local beaches. These scientists found so many living and nonliving things! @MrsDauenhauer1

Our second grade mathematians reviewed place value in the most delicious way.

It’s that time of year again! Second grade readers adopted a reading buddy! One way we take care of our reading buddies is to read to them for at least 20 minutes a day. The students couldn’t wait to get started! @amico_ms @ip_schools @FxhPrincipal

During Guided Reading today, we had the choice to read around the room. Most students to choose from hundreds of books on Epic.

Our students loved going on a scavenger hunt for things that are living, nonliving, and dead. Such lovely debate in our outdoor classroom!

It's a good day in second grade when you can practice Fundations skills and play Bingo at the same time. Today we practiced reading and writing digraphs. @MrsDauenhauer1

Scientists draw models. Yesterday we went outside to draw what we saw in nature. Today, we adjusted our illustrations (or started over!) so they were models just like Anna Comstock would! @MrsDauenhauer1

Our class has been working hard these first few days of school building a community where respect and collaboration are on the forefront!

Our second grade students had fun building words today. Each student was given 2 letters and they worked collaboratively to build words. Students were successful at remembering our Harmony class goals! @amico_ms @FxhPrincipal @ip_schools
