The system was BACKWARDS.
4/ If we judge by WORK and ACTIONS:
Essential service providers = HONORED
Those practicing discrimination = LOWER

Kahar = Water carriers (essential!)
Chamar = Leather workers (skilled!)
Dhobi = Washermen (vital!)
2/ But then the system RANKED them as inferior. Why? Because of 'ritual purity' concepts that made NO sense.
