I am very disappointed with myself this summer. While everyone else seems prepared for Bengal’s newest spontaneous public activity, I am travelling around without carrying a tray of eggs.

Apparently, in Bengal these days, ordinary citizens are getting sudden bursts of democratic anger at precisely the same moment political leaders are being escorted from police stations to courts — timings which, of course, are known only to the police. Yet somehow, concerned citizens just happen to be standing there with a fresh supply of eggs.

The level of civic preparedness is inspiring. Some people carry wallets, some carry water bottles, but Bengal’s politically aware citizens appear to carry eggs at all times, just in case constitutional outrage strikes unexpectedly.

Meanwhile, I am walking around completely unequipped. What if I suddenly encounter a leader? What if a spontaneous expression of public sentiment becomes necessary? What if everyone around me is emotionally prepared but I am eggless?

The FOMO is real. I clearly have a lot to learn about disaster preparedness and political logistics.

Can the State publicly shame and humiliate an accused before a court has determined guilt? When public parading becomes part of policing, the line between investigation and punishment begins to blur.

Due process is the foundation of the rule of law. Democracies are tested when they uphold constitutional safeguards for all. The optics may win applause but the real question can they pass legal scrutiny?

Dragged down streets with ropes tied around waists, handcuffed, stripped down to shorts: what sort of medieval barbarism is this by the @BJP4India government in Bengal? By all means let the law act against anyone found guilty, but this is gross abuse of basic human dignity. Democracy is based on the rule of law, not a hideous spectacle of public humiliation. Today it is political opponents of @BJP4India being shamefully paraded ; tomorrow it could be any citizen. Punishment can only follow conviction, not lynch mob-style degradation masquerading as justice.
