On Kenya Police, Dignity, Erick Otieno

I once narrated here, how on a journey to Lamu, the NIS trailed my every move, then a contingent of Kenya Defence Forces was sent to intercept the bus at Witu.

I was instructed to alight with my luggage, a police land cruiser arrived hidden in a cloud of dust, I was handcuffed, handcuffs removed, and vroom-safari-rallyed to Mpeketoni Police Station.

I spent half a day being interviewed by a team of security agencies officers as every piece of luggage, papers and currencies were scrutinised as Nairobi was on the line receiving updates and after a green light I was let go and a security agent escorted me to a taxi.

I proceeded to a cold tusker on the Lamu island and a story to narrate forever. On that day, only the Kenya Airforce and Navy were not involved in my predicament. And yes, the NIS had correctly observed me taking photos during my journey across Kenya, including, stupid me, of certain security installations across the security-sensitive bus-ride towards Lamu. Security agents immediately deleted them at Mpeketoni Police Station.

Back then, I emphasized how dignified those officers were and the amazing dignity with which I was treated for almost six hours. How thorough but dignified the Mpeketoni Police Station encounter was, as regards deep search, deep questioning and etc. that I can not narrate to not be re-interviewed at JKIA entry for sharing redtaped observations.

I just want to focus on dignity. There are many Kenyan security agencies agents and officers who handle Kenyans with dignity. Equally, there are many who do not. And there are those who murder Kenyans, case in point Erick Otieno.

Yes, Kenya Police may arrest us all citizens for all kinds of legal reasons. The arrest, transfer to holding facilities and processing should be done in a dignified manner. It is not difficult. I experienced it. But it needs the police to understand their training, to understand the laws they are breaking and for police to face consequences for breaking the law. Not, some police officers, but every single one of them who breaks the law.

Killing a 19 year old Kenyan gentleman is horribly evily sad, and for what exactly? Hamna watoto ama ndugu nyinyi? As Kenyans we have been singing this song for too long. The new government that takes over from the current regime after general elections next year should prioritize dignifying the lives of citizens. In-service re-training for all forces etc. Let me tag incoming President H.E. @edwinsifuna here.

And Kenya Police should be taught who their employers are. Erick Otieno, through taxes he paid, was an employer of the employees that turned against him and battered him leading to his death.

Kenyans are tired of singing this song forever. But we shall not stop fighting for justice - come what may(!~¤). Na mtuambie bei ya uoga mnaojaribu kutuuzia. May Erick Otieno not rest in peace. May he, together with all others brutalised to death, forever restlessly haunt those who killed them and their offspring. Eternally. ⚖️

I always call-out idiots on both sides of the political divide and I'm measured in my condemnation of both. In addressing the political elites from Mt. Kenya, I address them taking cognizance of their education and general outlook. After all, i met many in University of Nairobi as a student and a teacher. I always take judicial notice of their political awareness and education. The rare moments i address Hon Sudi and his ilk, i address him as I address the herdersmen who look after my camel in Bangal...slowly, carefully, a calibrated mix of multiple languages here and there, few sign language, draw images on the sand, show photos from phone while gesturing and nodding...hopping and praying the message will not be lost in translation. It isn't easy but we have a cardinal duty to breakdown difficult ideas and simplify it for the less fortunate members of our community who were born before President Mwai Kibaki introduced free compulsory primary education. Both Hon Sudi and My herdersmen in Bangal are smart, good and decent men. Unfortunately, both just didn't have relatives to take them to primary school. It will cruel on our part to treat my herdsmen and Hon. Sudi as children of a lesser god. I for one refuse to do so!

I have learnt from Kenyan contacts between 40-50% of senior and mid-level Somali officials serving in government in Mogadishu may own a Kenyan passport or ID, fraudulently acquired.

This is astounding.

The Kenyan Immigration, Intelligence and Security Services are all now working in coordination to quietly cancel these IDs and passports.

A second high-ranking Somali official was turned back from JKIA this week for owning a Kenyan passport.

Meanwhile, Somalia has summoned Kenyan ambassador in Mogadishu to protest this embarrassing incidents at JKIA.

To him, the unity of the Mulembe Nation is more important than titles, power, or personal ambition.

Kenyans shouldn't begrudge Sen Sifuna for his meteoric political rise. We should instead celebrate it. It's always a good thing when a young man gets a break in politics or any career for that matter and thrust himself into the national limelight. Remember, Sifuna hasn't elbowed anyone. He simply claimed a space that was empty since Hon. Kijana Wamalwa died two decades ago. For too long, Western was bereft of a political heavyweight that sat at the national table as of right. Sifuna seems to be the new kid on the block. And to be fair to the young man, his appeal goes beyond Luhya land.
