Laurence Tubiana: In 2014 when I began to negotiate the #ParisAgreement the net zero was seen as a totally impossible target, nobody believed me when I said we should have that in the PA. And now more than 70 countries have committed to that. #COP25#ClimateAction#NDCs#ambition
The #COP28 agreement for a global transition away from fossil fuels is a ‘win’ for people power around the world, but significant finance and action gaps remain from developed countries and must be addressed to secure a future where all countries and communities can thrive
1/9🧵
Nature is our greatest ally in the fight against climate change and while we are glad to see it recognised in the Global Stocktake, the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities must be at the heart of all climate and biodiversity loss strategies.
#COP28
As we look ahead from #COP28, we urge all nations to be ambitious with their actions, regarding their commitments made here as a starting point and to accelerate climate action alongside efforts to protect nature.
While we are pleased to see all fossil fuels referenced in a COP decision text for the first time, the wording does not reflect the scale and pace of change needed to correct the course to climate chaos we are on.
What we need now is urgency.

Our response to the COP28 latest Global Stocktake text:
Kristian Teleki, CEO, Fauna & Flora, says: “At the end of a year when we have witnessed the world burning around us, the latest draft COP28 Global Stocktake text is dangerously naïve and weak.
@FaunaFloraInt response to the draft of the First global stocktake under the Paris Agreement just released at #COP28:
At the end of a year when we have witnessed the world burning around us, the latest draft COP28 Global Stocktake text is dangerously naïve and weak. Climate change is not just, orderly or equitable, so the urgency to commit to phasing out the production and use of all fossil fuels cannot be overstated.
If we have any hope of maintaining a safe and liveable future for our planet, we must commit to an absolute reduction in fossil fuel emissions, as fast as possible. The planet will not be fooled by what amounts to emissions creative accounting – if we are to have a hope of keeping the planet we love intact then there is no alternative to phasing out fossil fuels.

“Adaptation needs all the ecosystems, if you start picking between your bathroom, your kitchen and toilet, I think you are in a problem.” - Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, IIPFCC co-chair, highlighting the key role of ecosystems, indigenous peoples and direct access to finance #COP28
Climate adaptation has been the Cinderella of climate negotiations - without a robust framework on the #GGA with comprehensive themes and clear targets, incl for nature and finance, we are risking to dig us deeper in the climate&nature crises. #GGAnow#COP28
Attention on #COP28 has focused on future of fossil fuels. But many vulnerable countries say more support to adapt to climate change is most important issue at the summit.
“Adaptation is a matter of life and death for Africa," says Zambia minister. https://t.co/6pW6EBLtWO
On UNEP State of Finance for Nature, Annamaria Lehoczky, Climate Change Specialist, Fauna & Flora said: “It’s ironic that on the COP28 Nature day – a day focused on the linkages between climate change and nature – we are shown just how undervalued biodiversity really is. 🧵
More than 110 nations have pledged to triple the world's renewable energy capacity by 2030.
This is a critical step in ensuring we can keep the 1.5 °C temperature goal within reach, and including it in the #COP28 final agreement will go a long way in turning words into action.
Today, over 118 countries sign up to the EU's Global Pledge to double global energy efficiency and triple renewables capacity.

Our planet already has the tools to help tackle climate change and biodiversity loss.
This week, global leaders are gathering at #COP28 to discuss the most pressing issues that our planet faces. The protection and restoration of nature must be prioritised in negotiations.
