Only start with the first section of the "Guide" if you are actually perplexed at the seeming contradictions between the biblical and philosophical/scientific worldviews. #hottake 4/4
If you can follow arguments of deductive reasoning, start with the second section of the "Guide." That's where Rambam lays out rational theories of theology, providence, prophecy, and more. 3/x
If you just want to get to know Rambam's thought better, start with the third section of the "Guide." That's where he lays out his grand theory of Judaism. 2/x
This take is so hot it's measured in Kelvin but #protip if it's your first time reading Rambam's "Guide for the Perplexed," you shouldn't start with the first section. 1/x
@RationalSettler@BarackObama So then what really was/is the issue with his abstention, given that fact on the ground? So many people lambasted him, as if the vote meant anything substantial. It was a realpolitik move that did not cost us anything of value.
@JYuter Or "just" and "unjust." Would you agree rabbinic preference is for a more nuanced spectrum of "unjust," such as one who fails/trespasses/errs/is negligent?
1. Last week, Rav Shmuel Eliyahu wrote a morally offensive article about the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
To his credit, he took the criticism of serious talmidei chachamin (such as Rav Yaakov Medan) to heart and composed a much more nuanced article...
@RationalSettler If we can express criticism of the Iranian govt, non-Israelis can criticize our govt.
But the best way to change things is from here on the ground.
@nntaleb I had similar issues trying to get ChatGPT to give me an accurate year by year chronology of Maimonides' life. Consistently presented the same wrong information, despite being explicitly told to utilize Wikipedia.
