The fight for human rights never stops. Grateful to @U2 for using their voice to champion human rights around the world, and for their support to @amnesty’s work.

🧵 Amid the Iranian authorities’ unprecedented crackdown on ongoing nationwide protests, marked by mass killings and sweeping arrests, concerns are mounting that authorities will once again resort to swift trials and arbitrary executions to crush and deter dissent. 1/5
We condemn in the strongest possible terms the shooting and killing of a woman in Minneapolis by a federal agent during immigration enforcement operations today. The Trump administration has taken the life of yet another person through the unnecessary use of lethal force - driven by its cruel, anti-immigrant agenda - and again blatantly lied about the circumstances. The growing presence of ICE, along with militarized crackdowns on protests we have witnessed in recent months, have violated the right to freedom of expression and made our communities unsafe, harming all of us. This killing, as well as all ICE-related custodial deaths, must be thoroughly investigated and those responsible for abuses held accountable. More broadly, the attack on our communities by the Trump administration must stop now.
PAKISTAN: The repeated use of high-pressure water cannons by authorities against peaceful protesters outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi is a flagrant violation of their right to peaceful assembly. Pakistan authorities must respect people’s right to peacefully protest and end the disproportionate and punitive use of force.

Belarusian journalist Andrzej Poczobut and Georgian journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli have been named the recipients of the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for 2025. Both are imprisoned for standing up to repression and defending human rights 1/4
This is the 3rd time in less than a year that Tanzanian authorities have resorted to an internet blockade to silence dissenting voices.
Authorities must refrain from suppressing protests & instead respect and protect the right to peaceful assembly.

More than 1,300 people have been executed in Iran in 2025 - the highest figure recorded in decades.
Thousands more are at risk as Iranian authorities continue to weaponize the death penalty. We call on the international community to take urgent action to stop this horror.
The reports emerging from El Fasher are horrifying. The RSF must immediately end attacks on civilians, allow humanitarian aid into the city, and guarantee safe passage for those fleeing the violence.

Bangladesh: @amnesty welcomes the decision by the Bangladeshi authorities to bring 15 serving army officers before a court to face charges including enforced disappearances and torture, allegedly committed during the tenure of the previous government. This marks the first instance in which military personnel have been formally charged in connection with enforced disappearances in Bangladesh, representing a significant step towards accountability and justice for victims.
Amnesty International underscores the importance of full compliance with international human rights standards throughout the judicial process. This includes ensuring due process and fair trial guarantees, the use of civilian courts for the proceedings, and refraining from the application of the death penalty in accordance with international human rights obligations.

More than 1,000 people have been executed in Iran so far this year - the highest since 1989.
UN member states must urgently speak up and demand that the Iranian authorities immediately halt all executions.
“For a decade, China has kept Gui Minhai hidden from the world and, worse, those who love him — denying him regular access to his relatives, lawyers, and independent medical care."
Gui Minhai must be released immediately and unconditionally.

South Korea’s response to this death shows that govts can respond strongly. Others should urgently apply similar pressure and resources and demand the Cambodian govt stops those responsible for human rights abuses whether in criminal gangs or by public officials. 3/3
Months after what was supposed to be a nationwide crackdown on scamming compounds in Cambodia, victims of human trafficking continue to be enslaved, tortured and killed inside them. The Cambodian govt's insufficient response is leaving people exposed to serious harm. 2/3
This horrific case, one of many reported inside scamming compounds, should prompt governments to urgently raise their voices and pressure Cambodia to show substantive progress in shutting down a deadly industry it has known about for years. 1/3
This is an important milestone in the fight against impunity for millions of victims and survivors in Afghanistan, spanning more than four decades of conflict
This may look like paradise, but the Pacific islands of Tuvalu are at risk from rising sea levels caused by climate change. For many, climate displacement is now a reality.
The sickening reports emerging from the ground in central Myanmar following a nighttime attack late on Monday should serve as a gruesome wake-up call that civilians in Myanmar need urgent protection.
