This is a fictional story, but it goes something like this:
An economics professor (often said to be at Texas Tech or “a local college”) agrees to an experiment after students claim socialism works as a great equalizer. All grades are averaged so everyone gets the same score. High performers slack off after the first test (class average starts as a B), effort collapses further (to a D, then F), students bicker, and the whole class fails. The professor then declares this proves socialism fails because removing individual rewards kills motivation.
