Wk6 A4: The biggest takeaway is that community support matters. Throughout the book community support and kindness was a key part in solving issues and caring for others. Support others is such a key part of making a community and the one in Thirst just proves it. #xuedchat

Wk4 A1: Minni starts to notice all the differences from her neighborhood to the high-rise. Her neighbors are nicer and more friendly compared to those living in the high rises. But, the power lines in her neighborhood are tangled and the streets are dirty and smaller. #xuedchat

Wk3 Q3: the “good news” Minni is referring to is her winning a scholarship. There neighborhood is so close-nit that everyone knows when something happens. It gives her hope for the future because she is going to be able to continue her education and learn more. #xuedchat

A1: Minni is experiencing the pressure of being the only child, since her brother has to leave. She now is having to be the one to take care of her parents and having to take on new responsibilities that didn’t have previously. #xuedchat

A3: My life mantra is “don’t think about what you can’t do, but rather about what you can”. This is incredibly important because I tended to focus on the negative and need to focus on whats good and what I am able to control/ do.

A4: I connected the ideas in the book to when citizens in Flint Michigan were struggling with clean water. I remember reading articles & hearing people talk about how terrible it was for communities and families. This is similar to the water struggles of Minni and her family.

A1: I would describe Minni character as hopeful and idealistic. She is always thinking her, her brother, friends, and family are able to achieve anything they want. An example of this is when she tells her brother he is going to be the most famous chef one day.

A3: I agree with sending Sanjay and Amit away for a while because they wouldn’t be able to be found and put into potential danger by those who saw them that night. Although it is terrible to move them away from their families, it keeps them and their family members safe.

@lukentn I agree with you 100%! It is always right to check with the creator to make sure it is okay. I often find that other teachers now have blogs/ social media so other people can connect with them. If you use something by another teacher, try reaching out to them to make sure its ok.

@tom_mangione I love that you brought Piaget and Vygotsky into technology! I sometimes find it hard to incorporate them with modern classrooms and concepts but I love the idea of teaching them good ethics. Do you have any ideas of activities to incorporate copyright and Piaget?

A1: The most surprising thing I learned was copy images from google is illegal and unethical. I remember being taught to copy images off of google in 2nd grade technology, so it was shocking to relearn and realize we shouldn’t be copying and pasting. #xuedchat

Reconnecting intersectionalities wants to develop gender and sexuality can intersect with other identities. It also is how these are represented in different text. The intersecting identities can be language, age, religion, race, social class, and geographical location. #xuedchat

The queer critical media literacies framework tries and supports students to read about gender & sexuality through queer theory. There are 4 components to this: recognizing rights, reflecting dialogically, reconstructing representations, & reconnecting intersectionalities.

Reconstructing representation is how history and our cultures has affected/influenced todays ideas of gender and sexuality. This states that gender and sexuality are social constructs that can change with time. We need to teach that texts can influence a cultures beliefs.
